October 2014 / Edition 4, page 4: "FOR more than 20 years, Dr Murray Garde has been working as an interpreter in the Kunwinjku language of Western Arnhem Land. The Northern Land Council engaged Mr Garde to act as an interpreter with Traditional Owners of Gunbalanya after they signed an Agreement In Principle in August for a 99-year township lease to the Commonwealth. Mr Garde’s account of that assignment is a cautionary tale for governments, agencies and businesses which want to do serious business with remote Aboriginal communities where English is often a far-from-first language. ... The PUP’s NT leader, Alison Anderson, believes the PUP senators are taking her advice not to back the changes: "This is not going to happen because they’ve got a commitment to the two PUP members in the Territory to make sure they look after the rights of Indigenous people". Ms Anderson warned the proposed regulations would weaken the collective authority of traditional owners over big areas of their country and would help "only the minister, the Country Liberal Party and their friends in mining, gas and agriculture". ... Land Rights News-Northern Edition: Australia's longest-running Aboriginal newspaper
http://www.nlc.org.au/land-rights-news/
"Land Rights News was first printed in 1976 and is Australia's longest-running Aboriginal newspaper, telling stories from remote Aboriginal lands from across the Northern Territory. The newspaper has long been jointly-produced by the Northern Land Council and Central Land Council but with so much happening within the regions of both organisations, a decision was made for each land council to have its own production. This ensured that the NLC's media team had the scope to report on the issues which directly affect the lives of Aboriginal peoples living in its seven regions. ... "
