Women’s rights: Turning point in India, triumph in Manila

Women’s rights have been in the forefront of international concern over the last few weeks.

Up in arms against rape

Making the biggest headlines were the massive demonstrations in New Delhi and other cities in India provoked by the brutal gang-rape by six men of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in a moving bus in the Indian capital. The crime, which saw the victim suffer extremely serious wounds in her genitals and intestines, proved to be the trigger for the release of popular anger that had built up over the years over the rise in violence against women.

Brutal gang-rape in India is a call to everyone, worldwide, to ensure changes

Gerry Georgatos - Inhumanity knows no bounds just as equal to humanity's limitlessness. Recently, in Pakistan a fourteen year old school girl was shot the in head by the Taliban for speaking up for the right of young girls to an education. They stopped the school bus bringing home the children and shot the young Malala. On March 31 a Ukranian teenager died after a brutal gang rape. On December 16 the ugliest inhumanity was broadcast to the whole world when a 23 year old physiotherapy intern was gang raped on a bus in Delhi.

Filipino women march against US military expansion in the Philippines and the Pacific

Unity Statement, March 8, 2012

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2012, we, Filipino women declare in strongest terms possible, our opposition not only to increased presence but to U.S. military presence per se on Philippine soil.

The United States is increasing its military presence in Asia-Pacific, in particular in the Philippines, and the Philippine government is showing no qualms in allowing this to happen.

Recognition of inherent Aboriginal title

Not much use a charter of rights that can't be ratified by a women's legislature since all that does is perpetuate male privilege, which is at cause of why a charter of rights is needed in the first place.

The doctrine of discovery, as with terra nullius, is male speculation intended to preserve male privilege, which wouldn't survive autonomous female scrutiny, as the collapse of these approaches with the empowerment of women attests.

Finding the gaps in women's health services

Have you ever wished you didn't have to wait a week to get a GP appointment? Wondered where to go for help after a sexual assault? Wanted a women's health centre in your area? Know the difference between the services of a birth centre, obstetrician, and private midwife?

Australia’s largest network of organisations advocating for women’s equality marked the International Day of Action for Women’s Health on 28 May 2011 with the launch of a survey to identify gaps in Australian women’s health services.

Fighting for positive body image for young women

Equality Rights Alliance are running a campaign to fight negative body image for young women. We want positive body images in the media that show the diversity of natural, real beauty. So we’ve got postcards distributed through AvantCard, and online (http://iwd.equalityrightsalliance.org.au).
