On July 25, Dayan Anthony, a Tamil refugee, was deported to Sri Lanka against his will from the Maribyrnong Detention Centre. On arrival at Colombo airport he was handed over to the Sri Lankan intelligence service who interrogated him for 16 hours before forcing him to recant claims of torture under duress at a press conference. He and his family now live in fear of their lives.

Melbourne UK consulate rally and occupation (17th August 2012)

On Friday 17th August, in response to the UK Government threats against the Ecuadorean Embassy and there refusal to allow Assange safe passage to Ecuador where he has been given political asylum, a protest was held at the UK Consulate in Melbourne. Three protestors entered the consulate and tried to talk to staff about the treatment of Assange. Staff hid from the protestors and Federal Police and local police entered the Consulate. One protestor was arrested when he tried to bring water to those inside the Consulate. The video's below give a good account of what happened on the day.

The Rohingya are an oppressed, stateless Muslim people from Burma. The Burmese military have long oppressed Rohingyas and have committed ethnic cleansing to prevent the creation of a Rohingyan state. In order to avoid further persecution, many have take a risky boat journey to Australia. This forum will look at why.

Melbourne University media and communications undergraduate student Sasha Burden, completed an internship with the Herald Sun for two weeks. She wrote of her experiences in the university magazine, Farrago, page 27. (1)
