More arrests at Kutalyana as the Brighton bypass continues to destroy Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage site

Police arrest Jim & Aaron Everett and three other protestors on the 17th April for holding a smoking ceremony at Kutalyana (Jordan River Levee) and for breaching their bail conditions. They were merely trying to save their heritage from the bulldozers who are constructing the Brighton Bypass and destroying a site that contains evidence of Aboriginal occupation of Tasmania going back as far as 42,000 years.

Mass arrests at protest to stop destruction of Tasmanian heritage site

Twenty one protestors have been arrested trying to stop the start of construction of a section of a road bridge that will destroy a nationally listed heritage site that contains evidence of Aboriginal occupation of Tasmania going back 42,000 years. The Tasmanian Government claims it is "too expensive" to re-route the bridge demonstrating that in 2011 Aboriginal culture and heritage is still seen as both an impediment to "progress" and disposable.

Tassie activists halt forest work over proposed Tamar pulp mill

SFER Press Release Twenty protesters stopped work in controversial high-conservation-value forests about 50km east of Launceston yesterday.
The protests came despite the peace negotiations between the forestry industry and environmental non-government organisations. The group Community Opposing Destruction of the Environment said the action was in response to forest facilitator Bill Kelty's statement last week that organisations must strike a deal on the Gunns Tamar Valley pulp mill or miss out on the permanent protection of 565,000ha of native forests.

Aborigines ecstatic at emergency listing of Brighton historic area

The news that the Brighton historic area beside the Jordan River has received listing as one of Australia's outstanding heritage places is a fantastic boost to the chances of saving the area from destruction, Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre legal director Michael Mansell said. "The listing places the significance of the Jordan River area alongside Kakadu National Park, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. This is just a wonderful Christmas present to the people of Tasmania from the Australian Government."

No future in forest furnaces

27/ October/2010 - Independent Forest activists painted a 20 meter slogan reading “No Future In Forest Furnaces” on prominent Hobart southern outlet Water tower.

Activists are responding to the industry push for investment into Woodfired power development during recently announced forest negotiations. We see this as a provocative and very unhelpful move by
forestry interests to cling to a dying woodchip industry, dragging down Tasmania’s native forests with them.

It's been a long time coming! For decades, environmentalists have been trying to protect Tasmania's stunning, ancient forests from destruction. And timber workers have been trying to protect their jobs. This unresolved dispute has led to protests, arrests and, sadly, ongoing logging in our high conservation-value native forests.
