Rally for Julian Assange

I took part in a rally to show support for Australian WikiLeaks Editor-in-chief Julian Assange on November 25th. It was held in Brisbane outside the Department of Foreign Affairs.Approximately seventy people attended the rally. We were there to demand that the Federal Government publically take action to protect Julian Assange from being rendered up to the United States.

A visit to the Occupy Brisbane camp - Day 17

On my way to work this morning I took a detour through Occupy Brisbane. About 50 tents continue to occupy Post Office Square in the city, with maybe 20 people out and about on site at 9am. Everyone was friendly and helpful, offering me information and keen to talk. They seemed to have weathered last nights torrential rain with good grace.

I spoke to a friend who had been there for a week, B. B said he was enjoying the degree to which to participants and the local passers-by were getting along. Locals and businesses were donating food to the substantial kitchen tent.

Ten years of war in Afghanistan challenged by Australian peace activists

Protests in Australia occurred to mark ten years of Australia’s involvement in the brutal U.S. led occupation of Afghanistan which began on October 7th 2001. Despite overwhelming opposition to the war, the response of the Australian peace movement was small. The largest demonstration was in Sydney wherer the Sydney Stop The War Coalition and Stand Fast held a rally and march. See video. In Melbourne, a small protest occurred in the city square and a St Pauls Cathedral. Some direct action did occure when five Christian activists in Brisbane were arrested as part of group of 25 people protesting outside Enoggera army Base. Enoggera Army base is a major staging point for troops departing for the Afghan war.
