New report slams Forests NSW illegal logging

SEFR Press Release 8/2/11South East Forest Rescue have joined with the North East Forest Alliance (NEFA) in requesting that the bodies who certify timber sourced from public lands in Upper North East NSW (north from near Coffs Harbour) and the south coast as coming from ecologically sustainable and legal sources, to immediately withdraw their accreditation of Forests NSW. NEFA has today released the report ‘Audit of Compliance of Forestry Operations in the Upper North East NSW Forest Agreement Region’.

Solidarity actions called around Australia to support the Egyptian revolution

Protest actions have been called around Australia and the world to show support for the Egyptian Revolution. Actions occurred on the weekend of 29th-30th of January in Melbourne - reports 1, 2, Youtube video ; Sydney report, Youtube video. Actions also occurred in many cities around the world. Protests have again happened around Australia on the 4th February in Brisbane and Melbourne and on the 5th in Sydney

Forests NSW fined for polluting waters

Following the investigation of Forests NSW logging practices last year after the discovery of a spate of breaches including logging rainforests and destroying the habitat of threatened and endangered native animals, the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water has confirmed that Forests NSW received two fines for polluting waters in Wandera State Forest, adjacent to the Deua River, west of Moruya on the south coast of NSW.

Fines for 73 climate change activists protesting proposed power station

The Muswellbrook Local Court today was crammed with activists. In the largest single court appearance for an Australian climate protest 73 people faced trespass charges for a mass civil disobedience protest on December 5, 2010. They were each fined $250 by the court.

Clive Hamilton and David Shoebridge to support Rising Tide 7 - Trial this week

Rising Tide Newcastle: MEDIA ALERT Clive Hamilton, the founding director of the Australia Institute, will join Rising Tide and Greens MP David Shoebridge in a panel of speakers in Newcastle this Friday, January 28 to support the seven climate activists being pursued for $525 000 in ‘victims’ compensation’ by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS). The defendants will be in court on Monday January 31st and Thursday February 3rd in Newcastle.

Starting in 2003, Yabun 2011 will be held on the 26th of January (Australia Day). It is the largest single day Indigenous festival drawing an audience of between 10,000 and 15,000 and is one of the most important Indigenous music events in the country reflecting the huge wealth of Indigenous creative talent.

Although festival guests mostly comprise of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and the community, Yabun also attracts a wider audience made up of the general public, music fans, supporters of Indigenous Rights and Indigenous Arts and Culture enthusiasts.

WOODCHIPPING AND NATIVE FOREST LOGGING – IT’S JUST NOT CRICKET
This year marks the first official International Year of the Forests. As part of a summer campaign to raise awareness of the state of play regarding native forests on the south coast, today South East Forest Rescue have disrupted access to the Eden woodchipmill on Edrom Road. Murray Darling Basin Plan needed despite floods says Conservation Foundation

While flood waters continue to rage in Queensland with more rain continuing to fall, debate on the Murray Darling Basin is stepping up. Flood waters are slowly making there way down the Murray Darling system to the Lower Lakes of the Coorong.

The Murray Darling Basin has experienced its wettest year on record and there are now calls for the basin water plan to be deferred and for dams to be built to mitigate future flooding.
