http://rollbacktheintervention.wordpress.com/2014/04/29/2202/
[scroll down page] http://rollbacktheintervention.wordpress.com/
29 Apr 14: "The Intervention Rollback Action Group in Alice Springs formed in 2007 to support people affected by the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER) and campaign against these discriminatory laws. IRAG is made up of both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in Alice Springs and has close working relationships with leaders in Aboriginal communities right across Central Australia. This submission will provide a synopsis of how alcohol restrictions targeting Aboriginal people have operated in Alice Springs since the Intervention in 2007. It will then draw on testimony from speakers at a protest rally against these restrictions, held on March 28, 2014. The lead slogan of this rally was "stop racist laws and racist policing" and it was one of the largest rallies in the history of Alice Springs. ... "

ABC Indigenous News: Inquiry hears impact of foetal alcohol syndrome in Kimberley
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-05-08/inquiry-hears-impact-of-feotal-alc...
8 May 14: "The northern Australia inquiry has heard details of the extent foetal alcohol syndrome is affecting generations of people in the Kimberley. In 2010, the Lililwan Project was started in the central Kimberley, to try and gauge for the first time just how common foetal alcohol syndrome is. Local Aboriginal leader June Oscar, who helped start the project, this week told the Parliamentary Inquiry into Northern Australia that every child born in the Fitzroy Valley in 2002 and 2003 has been assessed. ... * GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: HUNYOR CRITICISES NORTHERN TERRITORY'S INVOLUNTARY TREATMENT POLICIES

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Hunyor criticises Northern Territory’s involuntary treatment policies
http://thestringer.com.au/hunyor-criticises-northern-territorys-involunt...
12 May 14: "The Northern Territory’s Mandatory Alcohol Treatment scheme does not allow people to have a go at arguing their case in Court but sends them straight to a no questions asked shot at rehabilitation. Just about all of those who have been committed to the treatment scheme without any major run at procedural fairness are First Nations people. Jonathon Hunyor is the principal legal officer of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) and he is disturbed by the mandatory rather than mediatory process. Mr Hunyor is calling on the Northern Territory Government to provide evidence that the mandatory treatment scheme is working." * CAALAS: DRIVING PEOPLE INTO POVERTY AND PRISON: HARSH NEW APPROACH TO FINES AND TRAFFIC OFFENDING

http://www.caalas.com.au/HOME.aspx
http://www.caalas.com.au/Portals/caalas/20140501%20-%20FINAL%20Media%20R...
1 May 14: "The Northern Territory Attorney-General’s announcement today that the Northern Territory Government will be introducing harsh new measures to recover unpaid fines may result in people going to prison because they are poor. CAALAS’ Principal Legal Officer, Mark O’Reilly says, "these measures are counter-productive, overly punitive and will deepen the poverty so many
Aboriginal people in Central Australia already experience."
CAALAS represents people living below the poverty line daily who are subject to high fines for motor vehicle related offences, including mandatory minimum fines for some offences. ...
CAALAS strongly opposes the ‘crackdown on unpaid fines’ measures announced by Attorney General Elferink today."

* GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR REX BELLOTTI JR

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: National day of action for Rex Bellotti Jr
http://thestringer.com.au/national-day-of-action-for-rex-bellotti-jr/
10 May 14: "More than five years have passed since Rex Bellotti Jr was struck down by a police vehicle, leaving him with horrific injuries and a ruined life. There has been no expediting of compensation just one delay after another. ... A day of action - rallies and marches - for Rex Jr will be held around the nation on Thursday, September 18. Western Australia’s Human Rights Alliance and the Ray Jackson led, French Government human rights award Sydney-based Indigenous Social Justice Association are coordinating it, but every capital city has jumped on board for marches and rallies that promise to highlight Rex Jr’s plight ... * GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: EDDIE MURRAY "DIED AT THE HANDS OF PERSON OR PERSONS UNKNOWN"

- Analysis / Opinion

http://thestringer.com.au/eddie-murray-died-at-the-hands-of-person-or-pe...
10 May 14: "Fast approaching is the national day of action for the unresolved death that launched the call for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADC) – that of 21 year old Eddie Murray in 1983. The Murray family and the human rights award winning Indigenous Social Justice Association have organised the event, which is looming expected large crowds in Sydney and Wee Waa and will also have marches and rallies in every capital city." By Gerry Georgatos, a life-long human rights and social justice campaigner, a multi-award winning investigative journalist

* GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: 23 YEARS LATER, RCIADC RECOMMENDATIONS NOT IMPLEMENTED

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: 23 years later, RCIADC recommendations not implemented
http://thestringer.com.au/23-years-later-rciadc-recommendations-not-impl...
10 May 14: "It is 23 years later, and key recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADC) are yet to be implemented and in the opinion of many therefore unlikely to ever be. This is not new, but architectural anthropologist, Dr Elizabeth Grant evaluated the RCIADC recommendations and produced a report which was published in last week’s Australian Indigenous Law Review. "The Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADC) investigated the deaths of 99 Aboriginal people in police and prison custody." The Wire: Cultural relevance key to addressing high Aboriginal dementia rates
Produced by Rachel Worsley
http://www.thewire.org.au/storyDetail.aspx?ID=11498
5 May 14: "Culturally relevant dementia resources could help reduce dementia rates among Aboriginal people, in light of a study published today by the Medical Journal of Australia. The study found that Aboriginal people are four times more likely to develop dementia compared to their non-indigenous peers. But the study also suggests that making dementia resources more culturally relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders can improve rates of diagnosis and reduce the anxiety that surrounds the treatment of dementia. ...

http://www.businessinsider.com.au/the-indigenous-population-is-getting-d...
5 May 14: "Australia’s indigenous population is getting dementia at a rate three times that of non-indigenous residents, according to research published in the Medical Journal of Australia. Dr Shu Qin Li, senior epidemiologist with the Northern Territory Department of Health, and his team analysed data for 784 dementia cases diagnosed between January 2008 and December 2011. The researchers found that dementia occurred earlier, about age 72, than the non-Indigenous population (age 79). ... "

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/croakey/2014/05/11/on-transforming-conversati...
11 May 14: "One of the clear themes from the recent #IHMayDay Twitter-fest was the value of changing the questions asked and the stories told about the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Arising out of some of those discussions, Mikaela Jade and Ruth Mirams, co-founders of the consultancy, Paramodic, write about four questions they have found to be transformative. Start really closing the gap with these four questions." Melissa Sweet, Health Journalist and Croakey Co-Ordinator
