7 Dec 13: "Maralinga - Muckaty - Medicine. Desert Mixbag. Aunty Sue Coleman-Haseldine talks about life in Ceduna, threatened by mining on all sides and the legacy of the Maralinga bomb tests. Barb Shaw and Penny Phillips talk about Muckaty and Isobel Phillips reads two of her beautiful poems. Michael Fonda from the Public Health Association of Australia unravels the myths surrounding nuclear medicine and radioactive waste. This is one delightful desert mixbag."

RTRFM: Understorey: Regulating the Nuclear Village
http://rtrfm.com.au/story/understorey-regulating-the-nuclear-village/
27 Nov 13: "Traditional owners from uranium rich areas in Australia speak their stories about what this means for caring for country. We meet Uncle Kevin Buzzacott, Uncle Glen Cooke, Kado Muir as well as Della Rae Morrison. There are prospects for WA’s first uranium mine, either at Wiluna ... or at Kintyre ... Mia Pepper, nuclear campaigner at the Conservation Council of Western Australia, says the Environmental Protection Authority process does not properly reflect true community concern, and calls for a public inquiry into the nuclear industry. Does caring for country mean we should regulate the "nuclear village"?"

* TRACKER: FEDERAL GOVT SUSPENDS RANGER OPERATIONS

- News

newsTracker: Federal govt suspends Ranger operations
http://tracker.org.au/2013/12/federal-govt-suspends-ranger-operations/
10 Dec 13: "NORTHERN TERRITORY: The federal government has told Energy Resources of Australia that it cannot resume processing uranium until regulators are happy with the integrity of the Ranger mine site at Kakadu following a massive leak of toxic slurry. ... "I understand the concerns of traditional owners and local residents and can assure them that governments will continue to ensure the mine operates to the highest standards." [Ian Macfarlane said] ... But the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation (GAC), which represents the Mirarr traditional owners of the land, says it has no faith in regulators." By Tracker

By Ryan Liddle; Source NITV News
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2013/12/09/one-million-litres-radioac...
9 Dec 13: "Environmental groups and Jabiru traditional owners are calling for the closure of Australia's oldest uranium mine following the explosion of a holding tank containing a million litres of radioactive material. ... In a statement, the local Indigenous representative body said ''this is nothing but a hillbilly operation, run by a hillbilly miner with hillbilly regulators. Based on the woefully inadequate government response to the previous incident, we have no confidence that this will be taken seriously enough."" By Ryan Liddle

* GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: MAJOR URANIUM LEAK ENDANGERS KAKADU - BUT PLAYED DOWN

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Major uranium leak endangers Kakadu - but played down

8 Dec 13: "A million litres of radioactive slurry has contaminated Kakadu National Park from a burst tank at Ranger uranium mine. It is a significant toxic accident but it has surprisingly generated relatively minimal news coverage. It took the local Traditional Owners to break the news to Australia. Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation (GAC) CEO, Justin O’Brien, said the Ranger mine and its surrounds may be closed for at least two months in order to contain the leak. The GAC represent the native title interests of the Mirarr peoples." By Gerry Georgatos, a life-long human rights and social justice campaigner, a multi-award winning investigative journalist

11 Dec 13: "As the Northern Territory scrambles to contain one of the worst uranium disasters in Australian history, Western Australia faces new proposals for uranium mines. ... The people of Coonana are no strangers to the uranium industry. Members of Coonana are Spinifex people who were living in Maralinga in South Australia until the 1950’s whereby they were dispossessed of their lands due to atomic testing by the governments of the United Kingdom and Australia and moved to Cundalee and then Coonana."
