ABC News: Legal aid service says alcohol bans will not work

18 Oct 13: "An Aboriginal legal aid service says Alcohol Protection Orders will not address the problems of alcohol abuse in the Northern Territory. The Government wants to ban anyone who commits a serious offence while drunk from buying or possessing alcohol for up to a year. If they breach the bans, they can be jailed for three months. Anyone who supplies alcohol to a banned person can also be jailed. Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service (CAALAS) legal officer Mark O'Reilly says all the orders would do is put additional pressure on courts and overcrowded prisons." By Gail Liston

24 Oct 13: "NT: The Northern Territory government continues to ignore a recommendation made by the Coroner following the death in custody of an Aboriginal man last year to limit alcohol supply to Indigenous communities. Kwementyaye Briscoe, 27, died in an Alice Springs jail cell on January 5 last year. ... The Coroner recommended that the NT government hold an urgent meeting in Alice Springs to commit to reducing the supply of alcohol from takeaway outlets, said Dr Peggy Dwyer." AAP

Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association: Warlpiri Elder wants his responsibilities returned !

17 Oct 13: "A respected Central Australian Warlpiri Elder says recent mainstream media coverage about extreme cases of poor governance in Aboriginal organisations, highlights the breakdown of the role that elders once, but no longer play in their communities. Rex Japananka Granites says during his time in communities there were always council meetings to discuss with tribal elders what went on and who came into their community. This responsibility, he says, no longer exists."

About 500 teachers, parents, and supporters gathered in front of Darwin’s Parliament House on Thursday to protest against the loss of 35 teacher positions. 11 Oct 13: "NATIONAL: Recently, NT Chief Minister Adam Giles sent Alison Anderson to the backbench - promoting Warlpiri woman Bess Price to Anderson’s portfolios – including the Women’s Policy ministry. It may seem a natural fit, given Price’s noted advocacy for the rights of Aboriginal women. ... Price is seen as controversial because she habitually blames the progressive Left for what she perceives is a silence around the devastating levels of violence against women in Aboriginal communities." * STOP INCOME MANAGEMENT IN PLAYFORD: INCOME MANAGEMENT EXPANSION IGNORES TRACK RECORD OF FAILURE

- Statement

Income management expansion ignores track record of failure
Green Left: https://www.greenleft.org.au/node/55110
12 Oct 13: "Adelaide-based welfare campaign group Stop Income Management in Playford released the statement below on October 3. ***
Reports that the Coalition is planning to fund major expansions of Income Management as part of the 2014 Federal Budget are deeply alarming.
Despite six years of income management operating in the Northern Territory, there remains no compelling, solid data that the policy improves the financial-management skills or well-being of welfare recipients.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Library's 2012 paper on income management concluded there is "an absence of adequate data relating to the effectiveness or otherwise of Income Management" and that benefits of the policy are "fragile and uneven".
The Equality and Rights Alliance's 2011 report into income management found 85% of surveyed women on income management had not changed what they purchased, 79% wanted to leave the scheme, and 74% felt discriminated against. ... "

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Town with life expectancy at 37 for its men
http://thestringer.com.au/town-with-life-expectancy-at-37-for-its-men/
10 Oct 13: "In the Northern Territory, Aboriginal males can only expect to live to 52 years of age, this is the average life span of the NT’s Aboriginal males. Thirty per cent of the NT’s population comprises of Aboriginal peoples, and therefore this statistic bespeaks of en masse neglect, it is a racial issue. Recent academic research has found that the Kimberley’s Aboriginal people are ageing faster than the rest of population, "old at 45 years". Homelessness is sky-high among remote Aboriginal peoples, and urban, and Aboriginal youth are enduring spates of suicides at world the world’s highest rates."
