The Northern Territory intervention - the new paternalism

26 May 13: "The Howard government used the 2007 Little Children are Sacred report on the sexual abuse of children in Aboriginal communities to justify its intervention with police and army into Northern Territory Aboriginal settlements. ... The intervention and the quarantining of welfare payments has forced people out of their communities, leading to increased homelessness ("long-grassing"), suicide and petty crime. This new paternalism, which continues under Rudd and state Labor governments, will only reproduce the same results as the old paternalism-poverty, alienation, powerlessness and hopelessness."

13 Aug 13: "Australia is a wealthy nation built on stolen Aboriginal land and resources. ... Current policies like Stronger Futures (previously called the NT Intervention) and Alcohol Protection Orders in the Northern Territory have taken away local control from Aboriginal people and imposed a one-size-fits-all punishment model on people. ... We would repeal the Stronger Futures legislation and begin a real discussion with Aboriginal communities. We would acknowledge the many strengths Aboriginal people bring to the table - environmental and scientific knowledge, artistic and cultural excellence, an understanding of their own communities and people."

"Australian Aboriginal people are undeniably our First Australians. These people have struggled under colonisation. ... KAP does not support the federal intervention because the program is discriminatory and exacerbates the alienation of people who desperately need to regain a sense of self-worth and basic human dignity. ...
KAP will pursue policies that: ...
* end compulsory draconian and discriminatory "intervention and prohibition" laws and provide authority to community leaders to establish their own governance; and
* maintain and extend the Community Development Employment Program and engage Aboriginal people in civil construction projects including building and maintenance of housing for their own communities."
