""The Secret Country was my first film on Indigenous Australia. I look at it these days and what shocks me about it is that virtually nothing has changed. Please keep that in mind as you watch the film. I knew almost nothing about the first people of my own country until I left Australia in my twenties and went to London to work. My London newspaper sent me back to Australia to find out the secret and shocking truth - which is that 'we' who are the majority in this country bear the same responsibility as the white minority in apartheid South Africa. That truth will be prominent in my new film on Indigenous Australia, entitled Utopia. ... " John Pilger"

http://thestringer.com.au/john-pilger-on-racism-in-australia/
4 May 13: "One of the world’s most renowned documentary film makers, social commentators, journalist and author John Pilger raised a few conservative eyebrows with an opinion piece in the UK’s The Guardian (April 30) where he wrote that Australia’s racism "consigns its dirtiest secrets, past and present, to wilful ignorance or indifference." The Guardian reaches a monthly readership of 78 million. "The story of the first Australians is still poverty and humiliation, while their land yields the world’s biggest resources boom," wrote John Pilger." By Gerry Georgatos, a life-long human rights and social justice campaigner, a multi-award winning investigative journalist

Therese Mortensen, Amnesty International Australia: No more secrets

23 Apr 13: "On Monday 8 April, over 40 people joined us at the NSW Action Centre for a screening of the second film in our Meaningful Movies series, The Secret Country- the First Australians Fight Back. The documentary, by veteran journalist John Pilger, examines the shameful history of the persecution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia, and caused a stir when first released in 1985. ... I was a little worried that a 28-year-old film wouldn't inspire interest or be at all relevant for an audience interested in current human rights issues. It quickly became clear however, that I was wrong." Therese Mortensen, a volunteer at the Amnesty International NSW Action Centre, organiser of the Meaningful Movies monthly film screenings

1 May 13: "Pilger, an award-winning television journalist who has lived in Britain since 1962, is a long time critic of Australia's "racist" treatment of the Aboriginal population. In this latest film Pilger says that "more than any other colonial society, Australia consigns its dirtiest secrets, past and present, to willful ignorance or indifference". While acknowledging that Australia "has changed" since he left the country, 73-year-old Pilger quotes from a history text he studied at school which described Aborigines as "completely amoral" and which said "we are civilised and they are not"."
