The Conversation: Government remains deaf to the data on income management
http://theconversation.edu.au/government-remains-deaf-to-the-data-on-inc...
11 Dec 12: "If Finance Minister Penny Wong is serious about delivering budget savings to Australians, perhaps she should rethink the government’s commitment to its contentious income management program. By cutting income management, the government could save at least $100 million a year for administering and possibly harming the 20,000-plus welfare beneficiaries who lose control over half their payments. The New Income Management (NIM) program in the Northern Territory has now been evaluated by the Social Policy Research Centre. Its report raises serious questions on whether it delivers any significant benefits." By Eva Cox, Professorial Fellow Jumbunna IHL, University of Technology, Sydney

Overland literary journal: Income management in the Northern Territory: racism is still the issue

11 Dec 12: "The Evaluating New Income Management in the Northern Territory: First Evaluation Report was publicly released last week, four months after it was submitted to the government. The report’s findings vindicate those who have campaigned to stop compulsory income management. ... It surveyed 818 people subject to compulsory income management. A clear majority believe that overall, compulsory income management has not improved their lives or has made things harder for them. Those surveyed who want to stay on income management, or would ‘recommend income management to others’ are in the minority ... 10 Dec 12: "The Northern Territory branch of the Australian Labor Party has passed a resolution against the construction of a radioactive waste facility at Muckaty Station near Tennant Creek. The Federal Labor Government is planning to build Australia's first nuclear waste dump and has earmarked Muckaty as its preferred site. ALP NT president Matthew Gardiner says members don't support the waste being stored in the Territory. "(We) also call on the Federal Government to establish an independent and open inquiry that looks into the long-term storage of nuclear waste in Australia," he said." By Allyson Horn

Robin Chapple MLC: WA government bungles Browse land seizure again: Grylls' incompetence reaches new heights
http://www.robinchapple.com/wa-government-bungles-browse-land-seizure-ag...
10 Dec 12: "Greens WA Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Robin Chapple MLC has called for the Minister for Lands Brendon Grylls to resign after revelations that the Government has once again mishandled the compulsory acquisition of land at James Price Point.
"This is the second time the Government has botched the acquisition of land for the Browse LNG hub by failing to carry out what should be a procedural matter," Mr Chapple said.
"Just a couple of weeks ago, on 19 November, the Premier Colin Barnett issued a statement saying the agreement reached with Traditional Owners had been in accordance with the Commonwealth Native Title process under the supervision of the Federal Court.
"Now we find this is not the case. This tops anything we have previously seen from this government and I don’t think it can be put down to incompetence alone. ... ""

Senator Rachel Siewert: Greens say Barnett should abandon compulsory acquisition
http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/greens-say...
10 Dec 12: "The Australian Greens say the WA Government should abandon any further attempts to compulsorily acquire land at James Price Point.
"The threat to compulsorily acquire land has led division amongst Aboriginal people and has undermined the concept of free, prior and informed consent," Senator Rachel Siewert said today.
"Yet again we see another failure of due process, which demonstrates the Government’s lack of concern or consideration when it comes to James Price Point - they’re much more interested in developing their industrial hub, whatever the cost.
"The Government should work with Aboriginal people and the joint venture partners to find a better resolution to this issue- one which does not involve the location of this gas hub at James Price Point.
"Any attempts to compulsorily acquire the land should be immediately ended and alternative sites should be examined," Senator Siewert concluded."
