8 May 14: "A newly formed peak represenative body for Aborignal Community Radio Stations across Northern Australia has slammed proposed funding cuts to the sector and says if they do go ahead the global indigenous community will see it as an attempt to silence the voice of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Dr Donna Oedegaard from Radio Larrakia says Aborignal radio is doing so much in terms of capacity building within communities that any talk of funding cuts to the sector is "totally incomprehensible". Northern Alliance members include Radio Larrakia, TEABA, NG Media, Goolarri Media QRAM and CAAMA ."

About CAAMA
http://caama.com.au/
"The Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) began operations in 1980 and was the first Aboriginal group to be allocated a broadcasting license. The Aboriginal people of Central Australia own CAAMA through an association regulated under the Incorporations Act , and its objectives focus on the social, cultural and economic advancement of Aboriginal peoples. It has a clear mandate to promote Aboriginal culture, language, dance, and music while generating economic benefits in the form of training, employment and income generation. CAAMA produces media products that engenders pride in Aboriginal culture, while informing and educating the wider community of the richness and diversity of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia."

8 May 14: "A veteran Central Australian remote broadcaster has urged government to maintain funding to the community sector and says that when his people hear their language on radio it makes them feel proud to be Aboriginal. Golden Guitar winner Warren H Williams who was the first RIBS broadcaster to present a program through the CAAMA network from his home community at Ntaria almost twenty years ago… says his people want to go forward and do their own thing - not be mainstreamed into the ABC or any other whitefella controlled broadcasting service."

* IRCA - INDIGENOUS REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS ASSOCIATION: COMMUNITY BROADCASTING PROGRAM SUPPORTS ESSENTIAL MEDIA SERVICES

- Press Release

IRCA - Indigenous Remote Communications Association: Community Broadcasting Program supports essential media services
[scroll down page] http://www.irca.net.au/
7 May 14: "IRCA reminds the Federal Government, before handing down its May budget, that community broadcasting provides an essential service in remote Indigenous communities.
IRCA is concerned that the National Commission of Audit recommendation to cut funding to the Community Broadcasting Program would have a huge impact on the Indigenous broadcasting sector if implemented.
IRCA represents 8 remote Indigenous media organisations (RIMOs), which in turn deliver media and communications services to over 150 remote Indigenous communities throughout central and northern Australia and the Torres Strait. Their regional radio networks provide a primary radio service to communities spread across nearly 50% of Australia’s land mass. ... "

About IRCA - Indigenous Remote Communications Association
http://www.irca.net.au/about-irca
"Indigenous Remote Communications Association (IRCA) is the peak body for remote Indigenous media and communications and was founded in 2001. IRCA is committed to building the capacity of the sector while also providing tools, networks and resources that help remote media workers build their skills, profile and performance. IRCA currently represents 147 Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services (RIBS) across Australia, supported by eight Remote Indigenous Media Organisations (RIMOs), ... "

AICA - Australian Indigenous Communications Association: Commit to Community Radio
http://www.aicainc.org.au/general/commit-to-community-radio/
9 May 14: "The Commission of Audit last week recommended that funding for the Community Broadcasting Program be abolished. The risk to community broadcasting is so great that the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia has decided to relaunch the Commit to Community Radio campaign - and we need your help to make it a success.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Ask your listeners to go to www.committocommunityradio.org.au to email the Treasurer Joe Hockey. ... "

Vision - Australian Indigenous Communications Association
http://www.aicainc.org.au/vision/
"The Indigenous media and communications sector
A vision for a nation: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders should be accorded respect as the First Australians and are afforded every opportunity to participate in Australian and international life: culturally, economically, socially, politically and digitally.
A vision for a sector: Indigenous voices - be they content, perspectives, cultures, music, concerns, aspirations, humour, and opinions - are heard over the airwaves, in the broadsheets, on the screen, and across the broadband."

11 May 14: "Another post not on health or Indigenous stuff. But it is also on health and Indigenous stuff. The proposed cuts to Centrelink benefits for the unemployed and disabled will make life more difficult out bush, makes good food even harder to purchase and will push people to more processed, salty foods. Costs to seeing a doctor mean less will visit - and people are not too good in diagnosing the seriousness or not of their own condition. For Indigenous Australians, often in the lowest socio-economic group and having a much higher incidence of illness this is an added burden. ... "
