98.9FM: Smashing The Myths: "Reconciliation = Justice"
http://www.989fm.com.au/smashingthemyths/reconciliation-justice/
7 Jan 14: "Much of the dialogue regarding self-determination, sovereignty, land rights and treaty has been drowned out amidst endless political rhetoric and multimillion dollar public relations campaigns promoting ‘reconciliation’. So where did ‘reconciliation’ originate from? According to Gumbaynggirr historian Dr Gary Foley, "Reconciliation is an idea that entered the Australian debate, not as a spontaneous desire on the part of either White or Black Australia"."

26 Jan 14: "In an Invasion Day/Australia Day message Michael Anderson said from Singleton, NSW, today:
"The latest Declaration of Independence by the Wiradjuri Central West Republic took place at Wellington Council Chambers, NSW, on 22 January 2014. Our valid right to our inherent pre-existing and continuing sovereign independence is the foundation of the Sovereignty Movement, through which our people are finding revived hope and renewed confidence.
Having just had a meeting with Rosalie Kunoth-Monks, Co-spokesperson of the Sovereign Union, Anderson said that the commitment to the Sovereign Union movement was affirmed and that both spokespersons agree to concentrate our efforts on getting our people to understand the need for national unity, in order to achieve our common purpose and goals.
"We understand the way in which the autocratic and tyrannical leadership of the mainstream politics in Australia is a major treat to the continued Aboriginal identity.
The Sovereignty Movement that is growing rapidly across Australia poses enormous political and legal threats to Australia's autocracy, ... "

24 Jan 14: "Having declared Independence, the Wiradjuri Central West Republic raise their flag for the first time on 22 January 2014 at Wellington, NSW. The flag flies from the flagpole of the Wellington Council Chambers and is recognition of Wiradjuri inherent pre-existing and continuing sovereignty our lands, waters, airspace and natural resources. Elders Dot and Diane Stewart speak passionately about the importance of this action in the Sovereignty Movement, and the need for the formation of a republic for the generations to come, in order to free the people from colonialism. Dot Stewart also explains how the Independence Movement embraces everyone."

8 Jan 14: "NATIONAL: Every year it feels as if Aboriginal media is getting stronger and weaker at the same time, writes AMY MCQUIRE*. We now have more representation than ever - both behind and in front of the screens. ... We have more outlets for our voices, and yet we haven’t been able to put a dint in the national agenda. Sometimes our media outlets regurgitate the leftovers of mainstream media, picking at scraps instead of cooking the main meal. We may have all the raw ingredients, but we are working from the wrong recipe." By Amy McQuire, a Darumbal and South Sea Islander woman; editor of Tracker

"The story of the project
Laurie Baymarrwangga, 2012 Senior Australian of the Year, was born nearly a hundred years ago on Murrungga, largest of the outer Crocodile Islands. For the last twenty years, she has been working on a trilingual atlas and dictionary for children. This 600 page reference documents the natural, historical and cultural knowledge of the region in full colour. The book includes the remarkable photographs of Donald Thomson (1937), W. Lloyd Warner (1929) and Sir Hubert Wilkins (1925). A companion bilingual education resource for Yolngu-speaking children in homelands schools across north-east Arnhem Land will be made available for free, as a gift from Laurie to the children because it is their ancestral inheritance. ... Solidarity Online: Abbott’s corporate agenda means Aboriginal assimilation
http://www.solidarity.net.au/aboriginal/abbotts-corporate-agenda-means-a...
21 Jan 14: "Not content with the devastation of six years of the NT intervention, Tony Abbott went to the election insisting he would be the "Prime Minister for Aboriginal Affairs". He has wasted no time in launching a new wave of attacks on Aboriginal communities. Just before the election, the Liberals revealed plans to cut $42 million from Aboriginal Legal Services (ALSs). Following outrage and threats of protest, this was scaled back to a $13 million cut. But NATSILS, the peak body representing ALSs, has been completely defunded. NATSILS chairperson Shane Duffy said the cuts will "further entrench Aboriginal people as second class citizens in their own country". Similar cuts under Howard saw steep increases in Aboriginal imprisonment. ... The idea of corporate Australia as the saviour for Aboriginal people is a joke. Abbott’s corporate agenda is meant to finish off what the Intervention started-to dispossess and complete the assimilation of Aboriginal Australia." By Paddy Gibson

NACCHO political alert: Huge shake up as 26 Federal Aboriginal programs cut to 5
[NACCHO: National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation]
http://nacchocommunique.com/2014/01/22/naccho-political-alert-huge-shake...
22 Jan 14: "A HUGE shake-up of indigenous affairs is under way, with the Abbott government planning to collapse 26 programs worth $2.39 billion a year into five or six broad areas and the rigid application and reporting process abandoned to cut red tape and allow more of a focus on jobs. Under the previous Labor government, more than 150 indigenous-specific activities and services were being driven by eight departments through 26 programs. Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion said too much money was tied up in the application for funding and reporting processes, rather than being spent on Aborigines, and the radical overhaul would end this."
