Walmandan Tent Embassy - young and old - will stand in the way of Woodside attempts to damage their heritage

Walmandan Tent Embassy has held strong for near a year at James Price Point however after it was recently uncovered that Woodside Petroleum had applied for clearances to drill on Aboriginal sacred sites it is clear that tensions between Traditional Owners and the state government backed Woodside-led-joint-venture to build a gas hub will escalate to new heights.

Goolarabooloo Senior Law Men Phillip and Joseph Roe, with family and community members are camped at Walmandan (the Goolarabooloo name for James Price Point).

WA's Aboriginal youth suffering

On the back of reports released on the well-being of Aboriginal youth, with figures tabled showing more than half of Aboriginal youth are developmentally vulnerable Western Australia's Commissioner for Children and Young People Michelle Scott has called upon the state for investment in programs.

Commissioner Scott released brief reports on "Indigenous education, risky behaviour and physical health" and said that the children were most vulnerable from their first year of school.

Government plans to squash Swan Valley Nyungahs with a park

Many of the Swan Valley Nyungah Community are still homeless after the government closed their community in Lockridge, Perth in 2003. Recently, Elder Herbert Bropho led a reclamation of the site for his peoples and he has refused to leave.

The site still maintains the rammed earth and mud houses which were home to many people however the state government announced that it is considering turning the heritage listed site into a "Nyoongar Park".

Woodside and the shire of Broome taken to the Supreme Court by Elder

Goolarabooloo man Richard Hunter, a Traditional Owner of James Price Point, has launched a civil suit in the Supreme Court against Woodside Petroleum.

The Western Australian Environment Defenders Office (WAEDO) has launched the case on behalf of Mr Hunter. WAEDO on Monday May 28 wrote to Woodside and the shire of Broome to stop all works at the James Price Point site. WAEDO has given Woodside 48 hours to cease the works otherwise it will seek a court injunction.

AMA report says government needs to do more for Indigenous health

President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Steve Hambleton says the federal government has to do much more for Indigenous health - "There is a long way to go."

On Saturday May 26 at the AMA National Conference the AMA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Report: Progress to Date and Challenges that Remain was released.

The report summarises the recommendation of the AMA Indigenous Health Report Cards over the past ten years and analyses the major government measures related to the recommendations that have been implemented.

Bob Carr said that it is abominable that children are in adult prisons - therefore release them all, now. Now that the Governor of Kerobokan has supported the right to early parole for Schapelle Corby, Australia needs to keep its side and en masse release all the children - now.

The conversations between DFAT and their counterparts, between Australian and Indonesian foreign ministries have occurred in that the goodwill of a sentence reduction, early parole for Schapelle Corby was brought up alongside the urgent need for Indonesian children in Australian adult prisons to be released.

On Wednesday 30th of May, the British Supreme Court will decide on Julian Assange's final appeal against extradition to Sweden.

Protest actions are being planned in each state capital across Australia, demanding the Australian government use its power to prevent any effort by the United States government to have Assange sent to the US from Sweden.

Ali Jasmin was 13 years old when the Commonwealth of Australia locked him up in an adult prison for being a deckhand on a boat of Asylum Seekers, and hence for assisting people in the safe passage of Asylum to our shores. International maritime laws and the various United Conventions and protocols asserting the rights of those seeking Asylum would cast this young boy as a hero, and rightfully so however not the Australian government and its institutions.
