Cry Me A River – Pipeline Policy A Real Drag

The folly of the State Government’s North-South pipeline water policy will be exposed by author, adventurer and lifelong water-engineer Steve Posselt, as he paddles and drags a kayak from Echuca to Melbourne. He started his journey on August 1.

The already stressed nature of the Goulburn River system means Posselt will be forced to trek over hills and dried out parts of the River before he reaches Melbourne on August 16.

PETA protests at whipping of horses - 1 August 2009

Coming out of ACMI at Federation Square on my way to a rally in support of the people of Honduras - report coming soon - my eye was caught by an unexpected sight across the way in front of the Australian Racing Museum - which was otherwise advertising the celebration on Sunday 2 August of the traditional "horses' birthday":

There is a short video of the protest on EngageMedia - http://www.engagemedia.org/Members/pc/videos/peta-1aug09.mpg/view - also available on YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvZPOxk9Klw

The residents of the Alice Springs town camps have fought for many decades to keep their land. The town campers' organization, the Tangentyere Council, has worked hard with a tiny budget to maintain housing and supply other basic services such as running water.

Now the Federal Indigenous Affairs Minster, Jenny Macklin, is threatening to compulsorily acquire the town camps in early August. People will pay rent to the NT Government which has a record of failing to maintain housing and of evicting Aboriginal families on trivial grounds.

Emergency Services Officers at Morwell's Hazelwood power station have been striking for almost 4 months, demanding better pay and conditions on par with their follow workers at Yallourn and Loy Yang power plants, increased numbers and proper safety training.
ESOs take on responsibilities in situations of fires, leakages, equipment failures and all other safety risks in the mine and the power plant. Yet their base rate of pay is just $19.32 per hour, only slightly above minimum wage.
