Ever since Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948, the rights of the Tamils have been under attack. The Sinhala ruling elites have used anti-Tamil racism to secure power and privilege and deflect discontent from below. The history of Sri Lanka is marked by a bloody series of government-instigated anti-Tamil programs and policy mandates.

The persecuted and besieged Tamils finally turned to armed struggle to secure independence in their traditional homelands. With the military defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), this phase appears to have come to an end.

Climate emergency: Thousands march for action across Australia

On June 13, 2009 thousands of people around Australia rallied for action on Climate Change, calling for 100% renewable energy by 2020 and demanding that Australia must make the shift from fossil fuels to wind, solar and other available renewable technologies. Rallies were held in capital cities around Australia, with people siting down outside Kevin Rudd's city office in Sydney and a sitdown protest in front of the Melbourne Town Hall where the Victorian State ALP conference was ocurring.

Jura and Black Rose Books are proud to present the first Sydney Anarchist Film Festival. We are showing 14 great films over the queens birthday long weekend (5th - 8th June). The films include tasty rarities as well as anarchist smash hits. Join us this May Day to tell the Labor Party that we will not accept the manipulation of policy to suit their privatisation agenda.

Labor Party policy clearly states: “Labor opposes the private contract management of prisons.”

Corrective Services Minister John Robertson is trying to get ALP HQ to say that selling off Cessnock and Parklea prisons to international companies to run does not breach Labor policy.

When the powerful ALP Administrative Committee meets this Friday morning, Minister Robertson wants them to agree with his topsy turvy argument.
