24 PROMINENT SOUTH AUSTRALIANS CALL ON THE GOVERNMENT TO END THE NT INTERVENTION:

- Media Release

Northern Territory Intervention And Government Consultation
Our Generation: http://www.ourgeneration.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/SA-Media-Rele...
14 Jul 11: "Twenty four eminent South Australians today sent a letter of protest containing a public statement to the Prime Minister about the continuing Northern Territory Intervention and the Government’s totally inadequate current consultation process.
Principal Signatory the Hon. Robyn Layton Q.C said that: "Positive change requires respect and genuine engagement with Aboriginal people."
She further said: "Visiting some 98 Aboriginal communities over 6 weeks is no way to respectfully consult Aboriginal people on a 28 page Discussion Paper written in bureaucratic English".
She continued: "While there are some aspects of the Intervention which could be viewed positively in some communities, it is the compulsory broad scale nature of the intervention which has been inflicted on Aboriginal people without genuine engagement at the local level which is fundamentally disturbing.""

14 Jul 11: "We are issuing our Public Statement in support of the Aboriginal people affected by the NT Intervention.
Newly announced "consultations" by the Federal Government are now taking place in great haste over a six week period. The 28 page Discussion Paper is inappropriate both in length and language. The "consultations" in some 98 Aboriginal communities are limited to a period of six weeks and commenced within the week of its release. The Government needs to ensure skilled interpreters are present, genuinely listen to the people's concerns, and work in partnership with the people. Largely missing from the consultation agenda are the three concerns many Aboriginal people in communities hold as essential: "Land, Law and Language". Lost in this process are the reasons for the consultation. ... " Principal Signatory the Hon. Robyn Layton Q.C

19 Jul 11: "A GROUP of prominent South Australians has called on the federal government to end the intervention in Northern Territory Aboriginal communities, claiming it has not only failed in its purpose, but in some aspects has made things worse. The group of 24, led by the former South Australian Supreme Court judge Robyn Layton, QC, the former premier Lynn Arnold and Lowitja O'Donohue, a former chairwoman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, believe the failed measures undertaken since 2007 have intensified problems and should be reversed."

ERIC ROBERTS: Yes we're robbing black fellas to pay other black fellas. And we find this quite outrageous and strange altogether when it's the Federal Government's initiative, they should be the ones to get it out of the Federal Government's coffers and paying it."

Winter 2011: "The Intervention is yet another example of the appalling treatment the Aboriginal People of Australia have been subjected to in such a short period of time compared to thousands of years of survival. Sinem Saban and Rev. Dr Gondarra supported by the Yolngu people and cinematographer, Damien Curtis, have created a sensitive and realistic view of the plight of those who wish to live a more traditional life in their homelands and of those who appear to be dispossessed." Summer 2010: "Local resident and journalist, Jeff McMullen introduced "Our Generation", the film by Sinem Saban and Damien Curtis which we were there to see. The film explored in depth the Federal Government Intervention into Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory. Jeff had told us that the film’s producers were not having any success in having the film shown on government or commercial media outlets and they were having to screen it in local community halls to show the community at large just what was involved in the Intervention. It is basically a war on Aboriginal culture. The dispossession of the Aboriginal people is simply continuing in a new guise." Carol Gerrard

16 Jul 11: "The Intervention has been a big issue in Australian politics and media over the past four years, although I’m still occasionally startled by someone saying that they don’t know what it is. That doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone’s informed about it… most aren’t, but that doesn’t stop them (us?) from having an opinion. Mine is pretty clearly that the whole thing is a mess. I believe the Intervention was a mistake, driven by paternalistic and racist politics, colonialist ideals and (most probably) a desire for extremely valuable Aboriginal land. I sincerely doubt that the policies of the next stage will change my mind." hexy

16 Jul 11: "At the same time as the government was embarking on its latest charade, hundreds of Aboriginal people and supporters rallied in Darwin on June 21 for the launch of "Rebuilding from the Ground Up: Alternatives to the NT Intervention". Unlike the government paper, this document outlines a genuine way forward for Aboriginal communities based on self-control and the provision of necessary resources. As Gondarra said, the government must "stop pushing their own ideas" and "listen to the people"." Kerryn Williams

Six years of 'long, hard' struggle: Communities call for new approach on radioactive waste management
http://beyondnuclearinitiative.com/
14 Jul 11: "Tomorrow (July 15) marks six years since the Howard federal government announced plans for a radioactive waste dump in the Northern Territory. There was immediate and resolute opposition from the Northern Territory Government and Traditional Owners and communities near all of the targeted sites.
Three Department of Defence sites were initially announced, with a site in the Muckaty Land Trust added to the short list after a controversial nomination by the Northern Land Council.
New legislation tabled by Resources Minister Martin Ferguson names the contentious Muckaty site as the only area to be further assessed, even though a federal court case by Traditional Owners is underway to challenge the nomination.
Muckaty Traditional Owner Dianne Stokes says, "it has been a long, hard struggle. We know we have support from people in Tennant Creek, across the NT and around the country. The government needs to listen to us that we are still saying no to the nuclear waste dump"."
