The Stringer: In identity lay the answers - ATSI suicides
http://thestringer.com.au/in-identity-lay-the-answers-atsi-suicides/
31 Oct 13: "Several weeks ago I identified that there have been 996 reported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicides between 2001 and 2010; from a racialised vantage this statistic is one of the world’s worst rates of suicide. Each year, at least one in four Aboriginal deaths is by suicide. I estimate that the actual number of suicides by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is closer to double the reported rate collated from hospital data by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Far too many commentators have been pushing the line that the suicide crisis afflicting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is extremely complex, and that solutions are not easily identifiable." 8 Nov 13: "South Australian comedian Kevin Kropinyeri has played a big role in the "No Laughing Matter" Comedy Gala to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention in Australia. ... Mr Kropinyeri is well known for his comedy but says when it comes to suicide; Australia is dealing with a hidden tragedy. "For those who are thinking about suicide as an option, I know what it’s like, because I’ve been there and I think for me a problem shared is a problem halved," says Mr Kropinyeri." 31 Oct 13: "National mental health organisation Headspace last week worked with young Aboriginal people and an advertising agency to come up with a campaign to encourage young people in remote communities to seek help for mental health issues. But Tauto Sansbury, long time campaigner for a Aboriginal suicide crisis centre, says it's about more than just an awareness campaign. Tauto says he's had no response from the State Government to his requests for funding to set up a help line and a crisis centre to deal with the escalating rate of Aboriginal youth suicide.
Featured in story:

* Tauto Sansbury, Chairperson of Narungga Nations"

World News Australia Radio: Reaching Indigenous youth about mental health
By Kerri Worthington
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2013/10/30/reaching-indigenous-youth-...
30 Oct 13: "A group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youths have come together to develop a new campaign to improve mental-health awareness among Indigenous youth. They are working with the national youth mental-health foundation Headspace in attempt to spread community information. Several of the participants explained to SBS what they hope the campaign can achieve. ... "There's a lot of stigma around mental health, and also an inability to find answers and to seek early-prevention methods. So what I'm noticing is young people are experiencing all these issues but don't know where to go to get help." ... " By Kerri Worthington

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Land and Culture worker says repatriate what belongs to us
http://thestringer.com.au/land-and-culture-worker-says-repatriate-what-b...
8 Nov 13: "Well respected Western Australian Nyungah Land and Cuture worker Iva Hayward-Jackson believes it is high time that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are redressed every dignity - by removing barriers that impede their right to adequately ensure their right to cultural integrity. Through cultural awareness and education, pride and empowerment will lead to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ improved wellbeing. Mr Hayward-Jackson, wants to see Aboriginal peoples, young and old, who had been disenfranchised from their historical and contemporary identities to have unfettered access to their historical and cultural histories. ... * GERRY GEORGATOS, THE STRINGER: INDIGENOUS HOMELESSNESS RIFE WHILE MACKLIN WRITES UP HER OWN HISTORY

- Analysis / Opinion

The Stringer: Indigenous homelessness rife while Macklin writes up her own history
http://thestringer.com.au/indigenous-homelessness-rife-while-macklin-wri...
1 Nov 13: "Ms Macklin has just written a much published piece where she claims much changed for the better under her watch as the Minister for "Indigenous Affairs". But report after report argues otherwise - when the statistics are analysed we find much did not improve under her watch and indeed much deteriorated. Ms Macklin claimed much has changed positively for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples especially with housing and for children with education. But the recent Council of Australian Governments (COAG) report finds that little has changed in especially education, and less than 2,000 second-rate houses were built during her watch."
