The Stringer: Wes Morris slams government suicide prevention programs
http://thestringer.com.au/wes-morris-slams-government-suicide-prevention...
30 Sep 13: "The spates of Aboriginal youth suicides have reached horrific levels of prevalence, the world’s highest when compared racially. Aboriginal youth is suiciding at the world’s highest rates but the spike in suicides has not been matched by Government funding and responses in order to reduce it or prevent these spates recurring. Since my investigations into the spates of suicides more and more front line Aboriginal rights advocates are condemning the lack of Government responses but also attacking the inappropriateness of what responses arise from Government. The Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) coordinator Wes Morris has slammed State and Federal Government responses." 3 Oct 13: "The manager of the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) in Fitzroy Crossing has called for State and National Governments to refocus on the Indigenous youth suicide rate. Wes Harris, Coordinator of KALACC, said he believed the guidelines used to define a person as a suicide risk make our youth suicide rates one of the worst in the world. KALACC has been a part of the Kimberley for almost 30 years and has participated into coronial inquests into the prevention and treatment of youth suicide."

4 Oct 13: "Only dead people come into the dreams of South Australian Elder Tauto Sansbury. He dreams of the deceased, of young lives lost. Mr Sansbury has dedicated his life to helping troubled Aboriginal youth, to reduce the rate of suicides. "Death is our life," said Mr Sansbury, describing the state of the Aboriginal landscape Australia-wide, of mourning and sadness for young lives lost far too often. Mr Sansbury works pro bono through the South Australian community organisation, Garridja, - a Nurrunga word which means "to rise". Garridja works to address all areas of Aboriginal disadvantage." The Stringer: Kimberley's Aboriginal peoples old at 45 years
http://thestringer.com.au/kimberleys-aboriginal-peoples-old-at-45-years/
3 Oct 13: "Incarceration, homelessness and suicide rates are all up among Aboriginal peoples and particularly among the 15-year-old to 30 year-old age group but the statistics and findings for those 150,000 poorest Aboriginal peoples standalone, or contained to the remote and regional communities, make a mockery of the Closing the Gap claims. ... In the Kimberley seven per cent of the total population is homeless, with 90 per cent of that comprising Aboriginal peoples. Spates of Aboriginal youth suicide in the Kimberley in recent years have shocked right minded thinking people across the nation." Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory - APO NT: Youth Suicide
http://apont.org.au/index.php/youth-suicide.html
"In October 2011 APO NT made a submission to the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory Inquiry into Youth Suicide in the Northern Territory. The rate of suicide in the Northern Territory (NT), especially youth suicide, is simply unacceptable. Between 2005 and 2009, the NT had the highest rate of suicides compared to other Australian states and territories. For this reason alone, suicide is a significant concern in the Northern Territory, particularly amongst Aboriginal people. But it goes much further than this: Aboriginal youth suicide is a cancer in our communities."
