Mr Barnett said he believed the venture's controversial decision to build the project using floating LNG technology -- a move he opposes -- would be cheaper than an onshore plant, but there was not a huge difference in the economics of the two development options." When setting up its gas hub project, Woodside agreed to deliver a benefits package to the Jabirr Jabirr Goolarabooloo people. The project has since been scrapped but parts of the initial benefits package are still to be paid."

19 Sep 13: "The indigenous leader who negotiated Woodside Petroleum Ltd's spiked $1.5 billion native title deal in the Kimberley says indigenous people are being condemned to poverty while the gas company seeks bigger shareholder returns, The Australian reports. According to the newspaper, former head of the Kimberley Land Council Wayne Bergmann said it was "incomprehensible" that Woodside withdrew from the deal to pay benefits to Kimberley indigenous groups in exchange for use of the land at James Price Point."

Wayne Bergmann, the former head of the Kimberley Land Council, said it was "incomprehensible" that Woodside had last week abandoned the 2011 native title deal, saying the benefits package would have been life-changing for Aboriginal people." But in a signal the Federal Government intends being a tough negotiator, Mr Macfarlane said the Commonwealth would claim ownership of most of the offshore gas fields ... 19 Sep 13: "THE decision by Woodside Petroleum to formally withdraw from an agreement with traditional owners in the Kimberley is a sad result, especially for local indigenous people, Western Australia and, possibly, the environment. The Perth-based company had struck a landmark native title agreement, including a benefits package worth $1.5 billion over 30 years, with the Goolarabooloo and Jabirr Jabirr group. Woodside's original proposal was to build a gas plant at James Price Point, north of Broome, as part of its Browse liquefied natural gas development."

Juli 2013: "Die Kimberley Region liegt im Nordwesten Australiens und ist eine der wenigen unberuehrten Gebiete auf der Welt. Es gibt dort neben Kulturstaetten der Ureinwohner auch Dinosaurierspuren die ca 130 Millionen Jahre alt sind. Vor der Kimberley-Kueste und im Meer befinden sich Brutstaetten und Lebensraeume zahlreicher Tiere. James Price Point, 40 km noerdlich von Broome gelegen, ist eine der unberuehrtesten Kuestenlinie der Welt. Hier wurde die groesste Gasverarbeitungsanlage der Welt geplant. Wenn dies geschiehen wuerde, wuerde es die “floodgates” (Flutgitter) zur industriellen Entwicklung oeffnen, in einem Ausmass, welches noch nie im noerdlichen Australien zuvor gesehen wurde. ... Im April dieses Jahres hat die Firma Woodside - nicht zuletzt auf Grund des oeffentlichen Widerstandes - entschieden, das Projekt einzustellen. Sie kuendigten an, dass das Projekt nicht laenger finanziell tragbar sei."

Die amerikanische Firma Paltar Petroleum stellte bei der Regierung des Northern Territory ca. 30 Antraege, entlang der Kueste von Arnhem Land (einem Gebiet im Norden Australiens) die Eignung fuer den Abbau von Schiefergas (Fracking), Oel und Erdgas u.a. mittels Probebohrungen zu untersuchen. Paltar hat die dort lebenden Ureinwohner und Eigentuemer nicht dazu befragt.
Die Ureinwohner, die in den betroffenen Gebieten leben, wurden auf dieses Vorhaben eher zufaellig durch eine Zeitungsnotiz aufmerksam. Die Ureinwohner befuerchten durch den Gasabbau eine massive Beeintraechtigung und Zerstoerung der Natur, die die Grundlage fuer ihr noch weitgehend traditionell gefuehrtes Leben bildet. Die Firma Paltar weigerte sich, sich mit den Ureinwohnern in Arnhem Land zu treffen und ueber das Vorhaben zu reden. ... "
