Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association: Michael Mansell continues call for community-driven rehabilitation programs
http://caama.com.au/michael-mansell-continues-call-for-community-driven-...
12 Feb 13: "In Tasmania the calls continue for Governments to invest in community driven rehabilitation programs, rather than spending more money locking Aboriginal people up. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 14.2 per cent of the Tasmanian population, but are only 3.6 per cent of the state’s total population, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre’s Michael Mansell joined Nerida Currey on Strong Voices to share his views."

- Analysis / Opinion

The Canberra Times: Jail costly way to tackle scourge
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/opinion/jail-costly-way-to-tackle-scourg...
12 Feb 13: "With nearly $3 billion spent each year in Australia on building and operating prisons, the daily cost borne by ACT taxpayers is nearly double that of the national average. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are grossly over-represented in the cost-ineffective Australian, and ACT, criminal justice system. ... More than 50 per cent of juveniles in detention are indigenous. The ACT's youth indigenous incarceration rate is the third highest in Australia." Carrie Fowlie, executive officer of Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drug Association ACT, member of Australian National Council on Drugs

newsTracker: Greens call on NSW govt to get serious about culture and heritage
http://tracker.org.au/2013/02/greens-call-on-nsw-govt-to-get-serious-abo...
11 Feb 13: "NEW SOUTH WALES: The NSW Greens have called on the state government to publicly release a report into Aboriginal culture and heritage, four months after it committed to standalone legislation. The working party, set up to consider standalone laws by Labor in 2010, has provided its report to Environment minister Robyn Parker, the Greens say. But it is yet to be released publicly, as promised by Ms Parker in estimates in October. Currently, New South Wales is the only state without separate legislation for the protection of Aboriginal culture and heritage." By Amy McQuire

11 Feb 13: "NIRS/98.9fm: An Aboriginal legal worker in Queensland says it's been made clear at an on-going inquiry that Indigenous people must be in charge of Indigenous child protection services. William Hayward is a Developmental Officer at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service and has submitted to the Queensland inquiry into child protection. Mr. Hayward told 98.9fm moving away from Aboriginal-community controlled child protection towards mainstreaming of services would be risky."

- Analysis / Opinion

Crikey: Seeking truth from facts in indigenous employment data
http://www.crikey.com.au/2013/02/11/seeking-truth-from-facts-in-indigeno...
11 Feb 13: "There’s plenty of good news in the "closing the gap" report on indigenous employment. But the program outcomes are far from clear, writes ANU’s Professor Jon Altman. The latest "closing the gap" report is full of the usual glossy pictures of happy people and propaganda on how much the government is doing for indigenous Australians - a list of programs and dollar inputs, little about outcomes." - Analysis / Opinion

Crikey: Not closing the gap: indigenous lifespans remain too short
http://www.crikey.com.au/2013/02/08/not-closing-the-gap-indigenous-lifes...
8 Feb 13: "Aborigines are living for about a decade less than non-Aboriginal people. Crikey intern Callum Denness asks the experts what should be done about it. Raising Aboriginal life expectancy to that of the general population is a key part of the federal government’s "closing the gap" crusade - but a report out this week shows little if any progress is being made. Indigenous health experts are sceptical of the efforts being taken to close the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians - currently ... " Callum Denness

12 Feb 13: " Five years on from Kevin Rudd's historic apology to the Stolen Generations on February 13, 2008, emotions still run strongly through the Indigenous people it was directed towards. And in some cases, relief or joy at the time of the apology have more recently been replaced by frustration or anger at the lack of progress in relation to compensation for victims of the policy. Murray Silby reports."
