28 Nov 11: "Today, Elders of the remote NT Aboriginal community of Ramingining are shocked and angered by last week’s announcement that the fundamentally destructive measures of the intervention will be extended for another 10 years.
"We don’t want another decade of discrimination here in Ramingining. The government is extending and strengthening laws designed to assimilate Aboriginal people. We will not sit back and watch these attacks on our lives, our future, our culture and our law," said Mathew Dhulumburrk, a 67 year old Gupapuyngu man.
"After 5 years, it feels like the water level has climbed up to our neck. Another ten years will bring it way over our heads. The government is drowning us slowly and wonders why twice as many of our young people are attempting suicide. There is no valid reason to discriminate against Yolngu in this way."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-11-29/20111129-intervention/3701070?sect...
29 Nov 11: "Elder Matthew Dhulumburrk says the Government has failed to properly consult Indigenous people and taken away their right to control their futures. "We don't see in this community any changes with the intervention," Mr Dhulumburrk said. "There is no change that has taken place in our lives, our community. "It's like going backwards. We are questioning ourselves, what are we going to do, what will happen, what will be our future like." Mr Dhulumburrk says there are fears the revised legislation will continue to do damage."

29 Nov 11: "CLAN leaders in the community of Ramingining, in East Arnhem, have issued a statement declaring the Northern Territory intervention has brought hatred and discrimination and is slowly drowning Aboriginal culture. Speaking on behalf of six clan groups, senior lawman Mathew Dhulumburrk, 67, said elders in the remote community were shocked and angered by last week's announcement that "the fundamentally destructive" intervention measures would be extended for another 10 years. "We don't want another decade of discrimination here in Ramingining," he said."

The Labor government has introduced Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory legislation that extends the racist NT Intervention for a further ten years.
Intergenerational trauma caused by past policies of assimilation and dispossession is at the root of many problems facing Aboriginal communities across Australia today.
Now under Labor’s plans, NT Aboriginal children turning fifteen in 2022 will have lived their entire life as second class citizens under Australian law.
The persecution of Aboriginal people under the Intervention has had horrendous consequences. Reported rates of attempted suicide and self-harm have more than doubled (Closing the Gap Monitoring Report). Indigenous incarceration has increased by 40 per cent. Large numbers of people are drifting away from their homelands as resources and opportunity are withdrawn from the bush. ... "

Green Left: 'Intervention mark II' a new whitewash
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/49604
26 Nov 11: "The Socialist Alliance released the statement below on November 25. * * *
The federal government, through its "Stronger Futures" bill and associated legislation, seeks to lock in "intervention mark II" - for 10 years. Far from being the end of the Northern Territory Emergency Response (as the NT intervention legislation, due to expire in June next year, is officially known), the government plans to force paternalistic, controlling and assimilationist policies on to NT Aboriginal people for a decade - twice as long as the original intervention introduced by the Howard Coalition government in 2007. Again and again the Labor government is whitewashing Aboriginal voices, riding roughshod over communities and ignoring evidence. ... "

ABC The Drum Opinion: The Government's new case for the intervention
http://www.abc.net.au/unleashed/3684604.html
22 Nov 11: " ... on November 10, the Government began crowing once again about the "evidence" it had for the intervention. They claimed that an "independent" evaluation found that "Aboriginal people living in remote communities in the Northern Territory feel safer and receive better levels of government services than they did four years ago". ... I will briefly examine the evidence that is provided for the intervention in these reports, examine the housing program that Macklin now finds encouraging, and then look at some more evidence that may be considered relevant in examining the intervention."

28 Nov 11: "Michael Brull in his 3,000 word diatribe against the Northern Territory intervention had few suggestions for reforming remote Indigenous communities. It is easy to throw stones but it is much harder to come up with solutions. Does Brull really think things would be better if the Government closed down the 18 new police stations in the Northern Territory and got rid of the additional police and teachers that the Northern Territory Emergency Response has provided funding for?" National Indigenous Radio Service: NT Government onside with 'Stronger Futures'
http://www.nirs.org.au/news/latest-news/6648-nt-government-onside-with-s...
29 Nov 11: "Intervention Rollback Group spokesperson Lauren Mellor says they're deeply disappointed in the Territory Government's announcement of support.
Lauren Mellor: I think it's a very backward step for the NT Government because they've actually spent the last few years talking about the lack of partnership with Aboriginal people that's gone on with the Intervention - the top-down approach and the fact that it's taking control away from local communities. But the NT Government now has come onside with what is largely a locking-in of the key Intervention measures for the next ten years. ... Voice ends."

28 Nov 11: "Local social services in South Australian towns say they are struggling to cope with population pressures as a result of the 2007 NT Intervention. Many Aboriginal people have fled the territory seeking respite from Federal restrictions on welfare and alcohol consumption. For towns across the border like Coober Pedy, the population influx has swamped local services, with numbers more than doubling since 2007."

Winter 2011: "The Intervention is yet another example of the appalling treatment the Aboriginal People of Australia have been subjected to in such a short period of time compared to thousands of years of survival. Sinem Saban and Rev. Dr Gondarra supported by the Yolngu people and cinematographer, Damien Curtis, have created a sensitive and realistic view of the plight of those who wish to live a more traditional life in their homelands and of those who appear to be dispossessed." Summer 2010: "Local resident and journalist, Jeff McMullen introduced "Our Generation", the film by Sinem Saban and Damien Curtis which we were there to see. The film explored in depth the Federal Government Intervention into Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory. Jeff had told us that the film’s producers were not having any success in having the film shown on government or commercial media outlets and they were having to screen it in local community halls to show the community at large just what was involved in the Intervention. It is basically a war on Aboriginal culture. The dispossession of the Aboriginal people is simply continuing in a new guise." Carol Gerrard
