- 'Our Generation' Film Reviews

Elimatta:
Aboriginal Support Group - Manly Warringah Pittwater:
Our Generation - Showing in London - page 8
http://www.asgmwp.net/ElimattaWinter2011.pdf
Winter 2011: "The Intervention is yet another example of the appalling treatment the Aboriginal People of Australia have been subjected to in such a short period of time compared to thousands of years of survival. Sinem Saban and Rev. Dr Gondarra supported by the Yolngu people and cinematographer, Damien Curtis, have created a sensitive and realistic view of the plight of those who wish to live a more traditional life in their homelands and of those who appear to be dispossessed." Christine Waterer

Elimatta:
Aboriginal Support Group - Manly Warringah Pittwater:
ASG Information Night: Our Generation - page 6
http://www.asgmwp.net/ElimattaSummer2010.pdf
Summer 2010: "Local resident and journalist, Jeff McMullen introduced "Our Generation", the film by Sinem Saban and Damien Curtis which we were there to see. The film explored in depth the Federal Government Intervention into Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory. Jeff had told us that the film’s producers were not having any success in having the film shown on government or commercial media outlets and they were having to screen it in local community halls to show the community at large just what was involved in the Intervention. It is basically a war on Aboriginal culture. The dispossession of the Aboriginal people is simply continuing in a new guise." Carol Gerrard

WSWS: Australian government deepens Northern Territory "intervention"
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/jul2011/ntin-j21.shtml
21 Jul 11: "A "second stage" of the intervention will commence next year, when the emergency legislation was due to expire. ... The intervention has never had anything to do with overcoming Aboriginal poverty or protecting Aboriginal children. The current "consultation" is a smokescreen for implementing a pre-determined agenda, in particular welfare cutting and the removal of all barriers to low-wage labour and corporate profit. The "second stage" like the first, will use Aboriginal people to test measures for use against the entire working class." Susan Allan

NT News: Cheeky sign too much for Canberra
http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2011/07/26/249521_ntnews.html
26 Jul 11: "The cheeky redecorated Intervention sign at Yuendumu has reportedly had a short life. The NT News reported earlier this month that locals had launched a graffiti payback after years of putting up with the much-hated signs. The blue-and-white signs had originally announced grog and porn bans in the community. A new lick of paint and suddenly it said: "Welcome to Yuendumu. If you want porn, go to Canberra." Canberra itself has a thriving sex and porn scene - possibly fuelled by the thousands of Government suits who live there."

Green Left: Cafes, hairdressers and the NT intervention
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/48232
23 Jul 11: "Sara Hudson, a research fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies, recently wrote a comment piece on ABC’s Drum Opinion that supported the Northern Territory intervention. It also attacked public land title in remote Aboriginal communities. The article was what you might expect from a research fellow from the conservative think tank. "Public bad, private good", and so on. But one passage stood out to me, given I had visited many remote Aboriginal communities recently." Peter Robson, Darwin

National Indigenous Radio Service: NT Senator calls for outstation funding

22 Jul 11: "Northern Territory Senator Trish Crossin says she will push the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to strip Indigenous outstation communities of funding for services next year."

Amnesty International Australia: Improved lives in the Northern Territory
http://www.amnesty.org.au/indigenous-rights/comments/26265/
22 Jul 11: "In late 2009 Amnesty released a global report titled Going Backwards: Laws fuel discrimination in Australia's Northern Territory. The report highlighted the discriminatory aspects of the Northern Territory Emergency Response, focusing on blanket quarantining of social security payments for Aboriginal people living in 73 'prescribed' communities. Amnesty supporters in Australia and around the world joined with Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal activists and organisations campaigning for this and other injustices to be resolved." Sarah Marland and Lucas Jordan

ABC Alice Springs: Macklin visits Centre for intervention talks
http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2011/07/21/3274586.htm
21 Jul 11: "Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin is in the Centre for a series of community consultations about the future of the Federal intervention. ... A criticism of this round of community talks has been the short time frame of just six weeks, but Minister Macklin says this criticism is unwarranted as the process is actually taking much longer."

ABC: Call for tougher stand on welfare payments
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-07-21/20110721tougher-welfare/2804366
21 Jul 11: "The Northern Territory Opposition says Centrelink should start forcing people to train and apply for vacant positions in remote communities as a requirement of claiming welfare payments. Opposition indigenous affairs spokesman Adam Giles says it is unfair that people in remote Indigenous communities do not have to prove they are looking for work. He says the exemption is encouraging the welfare cycle."
