Australian South Sea Islanders Port Jackson (ASSI.PJ) and
Australian Association for Pacific Studies (AAPS)
"2013 marks 150 years since the first of 55,000 Pacific Islander
labourer's (known as Australian South Sea Islanders or ‘ASSI’)
were brought to Australia. Between 1863-1901, thousands
come, partly by kidnapping and in slave-like conditions to
develop the sugar cane, pastoral and maritime industries."

Land language group) back in 2008 when Djammarr Djordila
and photographer Belinda Mason travelled to remote
communities in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, at the
first anniversary of the Australian Government’s Intervention
Policy, to hear community reactions and ask them to
record a visual record of their opinion."

"Bark paintings from the Australian National Maritime Museum's
Saltwater Collection highlight the efforts of Yolŋu people
to share their connections to saltwater country with
non-Indigenous people. ...
Five of the 10 bark paintings on display were presented as
evidence of Yolŋu connections to saltwater country in a
2008 High Court case. The court verdict gave precedence to
Indigenous rights and use of the Arnhem Land coastline and
coastal waters over commercial interests and fishing."

acknowledgement of Dr Perkins’ tireless dedication to
human rights and social justice for Indigenous Australians."
"Prior to Shane's appointment as Chief Executive Officer of
the Tribal Warrior Association, his career included roles
working with young people in child protection, juvenile justice
and the law, including working with the Royal Commission
into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody as a community liaison
