Your honour will see that we are in for some inclement weather: Occupy Melbourne and the right to protest

Below is a repost from the blog of Raili Simojoki. It provides some good coverage of the case made on behalf of Occupy Melbourne as part of its injunction in the Federal Court against the City of Melbourne's compliance notice. A result is expected today (Friday 11th).

How democratic was the decision to reduce General Assemblies at Occupy Melbourne?

I attended Occupy Melbourne last weekend and had a very positive experience including attending a GA and staying over on Saturday night in the Treasury Gardens. I was pleased to see positive proposals being made and people working so hard to keep this movement going. A couple of days later I checked out the website and now I feel compelled to write about how whether deliberately or not, General Assemblies have been undermined by some people working within the Facilitation Working Group. I am referring to the decision at the GA on Sunday 6th Nov to only hold General Assemblies twice a week.

Occupy Melbourne challenges City of Melbourne in federal court

Fitzroy Legal Service have filed documents in the Federal Court seeking that the court make a declaration that a Notice to Comply served to Occupy Melbourne participants by council officers on Friday the 4th of November was “ultra vires” and hence “null, void and of no legal force or effect.”

Occupy Melbourne seeks to uphold the right of all Australians to protest as enshrined in the constitutional right of political communication.

Refugees are welcome here! - Rally and march, Melbourne 5 November 2011

The Refugee Action Collective (Victoria)organised a rally and march reiterating demands for an end to mandatory detention and offshore processing. This came in the wake of two events: the High Court decision ruling the government’s intended Malaysia deal illegal, and the drowning deaths of asylum seekers off the coast of Java a few days previously.

Occupy Melbourne turning into important test case for freedom of speech and assembly as harrassment continues

The Occupy Melbourne Movement is turing into a vital test case for free speech as the Melbourne City Council abuses its bylaws to harrass protestors. This Notice to comply was served on protestors in the Treasury Gardens on November the 4th. Its claims that protest signs are advertising without a permit and that people are breaking the by-law against camping in a public place. People are currently discussing what to do about the notice.

Occupy Melbourne – is this what democracy looks like?

I have just spent the last two days at Occupy Melbourne. To say that it has been an interesting political experience is an understatement! I feel we are currently witnessing a battle for the democratic soul of the Occupy movement in Melbourne. There is the linked struggle to decide whether Occupy Melbourne is actually committed to maintaining a protest site within the Melbourne CBD and a struggle to see whether it is the Working Groups or the General Assembly which is the ultimate power within Occupy Melbourne.

WTF happened at occupy Melbourne on Saturday 29th Oct?

I write as someone who has just spent a long night camping outside the State Library with no structures resisting harassment from both State Libary Security and police. I also write as someone who experienced this as a deeply empowering experience. To read more about what happened last night see the indymedia article http://indymedia.org.au/2011/10/30/occupation-re-established-in-melbourn... However yesterdays events pose some big questions about the democratic processes of Occupy Melbourne.

Inspirational video of non-violent resistance at Occupy Melbourne eviction

Below is a video made by long time Melbourne peace activist Anthony Kelly which in his words focusses on the bravery of the non-violent resisters of Occupy Melbourne. As Anthony says - it took 10 hours to clear the square, 100 arrests and at least 80 injuries, yet the movement continues to grow. Power to the peaceful!
