Film Screening and Q&A with Director

Maryella Hatfield is a lecturer in the School of Communication Arts at
the University of Western Sydney. Her documentary "The Future Makers"
tells the story of key Australians leading the way on the world stage
in renewable energy, particularly solar thermal projects.

It also focuses on cutting edge photovoltaics research in Australia,
with reference to Zhengrong Shi's massive SunTech PV business in China
and his continuing connections with UNSW researchers. The documentary
was funded by The NSW Film and Television Office and the Discovery

Victorian government launches funding for community climate projects

The Victorian State Government has just announced grants for the community greenhouse programs for local community action on climate change. The O'Hea Biketown Project in North Coburg was used as the flagship for the launch of the program by Victorian Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings at CERES environmental park in Brunswick today.

Use of public space is being restricted by privatisation. Earlier this year, the management of Barkly Square shopping centre in Brunswick stopped Green Left Weekly from operating its regular Saturday stalls. A community campaign resulted in Green Left Weekly winning limited access. While Green Left Weekly is happy to allow other community campaigns to distribute materials, access to this social space is restricted.

The war in Afghanistan is not liberating anyone from terrorism. A reported 971 Afghani’s were killed in fighting during August. 22 Australian troops have been killed, almost half this year. Documents just released through Wikileaks expose how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, and that the Taliban are becoming increasingly deadly.

While 61% of Australians think we should withdraw from A...fghanistan – on the whole we’ve been a very silent majority.
