Afghanistan aid conference signals indefinite foreign occupation

The article below from the World Socialist Website gives accurate analysis on the recent "aid conference" in Afghanistan. The Australian press covered the conference focussing on Australia's committment of $250 million a year in aid. The media, such as in this article from the Australian also pushed the lie that 2014 will see Australian troops return to Australia and the effective end of the Afghan War.

Undermining sovereignty unity to get at colonial compensation treasure?

Ballina, NSW, July 2, 2012 -- Michael Anderson, the political activist and last surviving member of the four Aboriginal men who challenged the State by erecting the beach umbrella Aboriginal Embassy on the front lawns of Parliament house in 1972 says he has been made aware that the Aboriginal sovereignty movement is being undermined by a number of people who it seems are attempting to derail the process and the movement for personal gain and to protect the interests of the British Crown.

Court orders extraordinary general meeting of Woolworths to discuss and vote on high-loss poker machines

On Friday 6 July we walked out of Federal Court and are pleased to say that there will be an Extraordinary General Meeting of Woolworths to discuss and vote on making the company's high-loss poker machines safer for communities.

-- In a nutshell, Woolworths on Friday was today unsuccessful in denying GetUp members and Woolworths shareholders the right to an EGM about poker machine reform. They did however manage to buy some extra time before that meeting; it will now happen in November. --

Solidarity message from Sydney Stop The War Coalition

Sydney Stop the War Coalition in Australia extends its solidarity the Philippines Stop the War Coalition and the other groups demanding that your country's Senate not to ratify the Republic of the Philippines-Australia Status of the Visiting Forces Agreement.

This is a military agreement, developed in secrecy by the governments and military chief of both our governments, that will allow the deployment of Australian military forces on Philippines territory for "combined training, exercises, or other activities mutually approved by the Parties".

This military deal is an attack on the peace, freedom and independence of the Filipino people, and the other peoples in Asia.

We understand that under this agreement, the Philippines cannot exercise primary jurisdiction over visiting Australian military personnel accused of a crime or other breach of the law if the Australian military claims that the action concerned was carried out in performance of an "official duty".
