Marrickville Council first to support the boycott Israel campaign

Marrickville has become the first local council in Australia to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel.

This week the Council voted 10 to 2 for the motion to support the BDS -- an international campaign designed to stop trade and investment in companies, sporting teams and other institutions with ties to Israel.

It aims to coerce Israel to restore human rights and return occupied land to Palestinians.

The United Nations and Australian Federal and State Governments have refused to support the BDS.

But the NSW Greens are backing the campaign.

2SER’s Elise Scott spoke with Green’s Marrickville Councilor Cathy Peters, who put forward the motion this week.

The first point that needs to be made is that Marrickville Council does not represent the wider local community on this issue.
The Council has basically declared war on a great number of its local businesses and individual people in Marrickville and Newtown.
There are members of Council that have no idea about how many products of normal everyday use Israel is part of, either through development, design or manufacture.

Council would need to go back into the Dark Ages to achieve its aim of boycotting Israeli designs and products and the only people it would hurt are the local community that it is meant to support and represent.

The Greens are out of control – at least people can now see how they should never be allowed to control anything more than tree planting workshops.

Marrickville Council may be the first to boycott Israel, however they may also be the first Council to be removed by its community based on the misuse of its power.

Sergio is entitled to his opinion, even if you don't like it. I think its pretty rich how you guys preach about how we should have equality for religions and all that other stuff, then you go and threaten someone with physical harm because they have a different opinion than you do. This boycott is a stupid idea, if you'r typing a reply to this comment on a computer that uses an intel processor, then you're already using a piece of equipment that was designed in Israel.

Im typing on a Chinese computer that copies parts that are designed in Israel so Israel gets no money out of my pocket.
If your talking about equality of religion you dont get citizenship in Israel unless you are a Jew.Israel have been threatening an killing Palestinians since 1948 and before.

Whilst I might understand your frustrations towards Israel, I find it
extremely ignorant and frankly stupid for you to single out one
country when so many others in the world do so much worse! By all
means boycott Israel (better check the goods though as you might not
end up with much at the end...) but you had better not be hypocritical
and boycott other countries that have violated human rights with far
fewer mitigating circumstances i.e. China, Vietnam, Burma, Pakistan,
Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Russia, where real human rights
abuses take place.
Also, do you realise that when Hamas' goal is to destroy Israel rather
than make peace, it makes it pretty tough to make more wholesale
concessions.
Learn some real facts or at least be consistent.
Embarrassed to by a Sydneysider with such an ignorant council like you

Very few people dispute this.

The Israeli government is occupying land that does not belong to them.

Israel has defied numerous UN resolutions.

Israel treats all non-Israeli citizens as second or third class.

I am a rate payer in Marrickville LGA. I am concerned that Council's resolution may have been misguided. On the other hand I object utterly to Israel's occupation of Palestine. I do not support a ban on Israeli products per se because I don't know the extent of Israeli content in what I purchase, nor do I wish to harm the people of Israel who are subject to government policies. But I can never support the travesty that was the creation of Israel and its consequent effects on the people of Palestine. Viva Palestine.

For those of you who asked about Israeli products:
when you buy a computer, make sure it has no Intel microchip or microprocessor - developed in Israel.
All Microsoft system (windows xp, nt, 2007 etc.) and Microsoft Office were developed in Israel.
Be sure to disable all firewall and virus protection software.
Cell phone and cell phones cameras chips were invented in Israel so forget about that too.

Paul, just making a comment with regards to your example of Jews and Muslims being unequal. The reason for the Arab going to gaol, was not because he was an Arab, but because he practiced deception in his attempt to have sex with the woman (something that was clearly intentional). Is it necessarily rape? I don't know. I'm no lawyer. However if the same thing happened in reverse the Jewish citizen practicing deception would have had the same sentence.
I question your theories with regards to Jews being responsible for Roman and American actions. If Jews are such are minority, which they are (as you say) where does this huge influencing power come from. And that's ignoring that if the Jewish people did have as much power as you claim and were hell bent on using it as you say I'm sure that they would look for targets that are more advantageous to themselves.
I'm not arguing for or against any side (I seriously don't get why there should be any sides) but I am just pointing out that your arguments aren't quite as strong as you claim them to be.

As a long term Newtown/Marrickville resident, with some Jewish background, I'm appalled at this action. I'm by no means an apologist for Israel, but recognize that these are complex issues, and easily converted into anti-semitism which I occasionally experience personally. I thought this part of the world to be a very tolerant place, where open discussion on all issues was possible and where we count among our neighbours and friends people from all parts of the world and all walks of life. Naively, I assumed that councils were paid to pick up garbage and make zoning decisions, not to take sides in seemingly intractable disputes half a world away.

I guess it was all too good to be true. Have no doubt that a lot of fear and anger has been aroused by this and there will be repercussions for this (until now) peaceful and tolerant community.

I notice the pro Israel people are good at insults but short on facts

Mel Gibson was right...........The problems the world is experiencing today have their genesis in the bastardy shown by Israel since the inception of what in a lot of peoples minds is an illegal state.

No doubt the jews will muster their collective muscle and win even this justified stand by the courage shown by council but regardless more and more of us (once admirers of Israel) are sick to the teeth of their bullying tactics. Shame on the USA for blindly ignoring the plight of the Palestinians and backing Israel at all costs. Shame on our State and Federal Governments for following the American line.

who do you think you are you racist councelers if the australian goverment wants to put sanctions on a country they will if every council takes individual action were the hell are we going to end up making laws to apease the loudest whingers whatever the issue you should all be thrown out of power before other councils do the same and turn our great country into another hell hole listening to the minority with the biggest voice most people do not care about the palestinians or the israelis and why would we by my map theres plenty of sand for everyone your both acting like idiots and the council should be ashamed for taking sides in something that dosent concern us.
