7 April 14: "Attitudes and policies relating to Australian Indigenous languages are in a state of flux. The Northern Territory government is reportedly again aiming to banish Aboriginal languages from the classroom. But there’s good news too: the Australian Research Council has approved a second round of funding for the Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages, which is being launched today in Darwin. Building the archive: The Living Archive is a digital collection of materials in Australian Indigenous languages from around the Northern Territory. Most of the current collection was produced by Literature Production Centres at schools with bilingual programs over several decades from 1973." Michael Christie, Brian Devlin & Cathy Bow

30 Mar 14: "Current NT Government policies do not appear to favour the use of Indigenous languages in the classroom, but the Australian Research Council has recently agreed to fund a second stage of the Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages. ... The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages (LAAL) is a digital collection of materials in Australian Indigenous languages and English from around the Northern Territory. These materials were produced by Literature Production Centres at schools with bilingual programs over several decades from 1973. With funding assistance from the Australian Research Council the books have been catalogued and digitised, and with permission from the original creators, uploaded to the LAAL website." Brian Devlin

"The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages is a digital archive of endangered literature in Australian Indigenous languages from around the Northern Territory. This is a living archive, with connections to the people and communities where the books were created. This will allow for collaborative research work with the Indigenous authorities and communities. There are already hundreds of items in 25 languages from all over the NT. Click on the map to enter the archive. Stage one involved collecting books from the various Literature Production Centres at schools which had bilingual education programs. These books were catalogued and digitised, and with permission from the original creators, uploaded to this website."
