20 Mar 14: "Statement by SNAICC Chairperson Sharron Williams on Closing the Gap Day The Australia
Boost Indigenous early childhood funding - or risk failure on new school attendance target ...
Government must provide a substantial boost to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander early childhood education services if it is to meet its new Closing the Gap target on Indigenous school attendance rates and achieve sustained success in other target areas.
SNAICC welcomes the Government’s new target and agrees with Prime Minister Abbott that closing the gap on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander disadvantage cannot be achieved unless there is significant progress in education outcomes.
Improving school attendance rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children is certainly an important start. But measures under the new target should go far beyond simply marking names off school rolls.
To make meaningful progress, measures must also engage our children and families in the education system, which in turn must be more responsive to their needs and strengths. And there must be more focus on preparing children for school - having them healthy, confident and excited to learn. ... "

19 Mar 14: "One of the factors impacting on the relationship of Indigenous Australians with mainstream society is the way in which the media portray Indigenous people and issues. There is growing research that suggests negative media portrayals in relation to Indigenous Australians perpetuates racist stereotypes among the wider population and that this type of racism has a major impact on the health of Indigenous Australians
Portrayal of Indigenous Health in Selected Australian Media Melissa J. Stoneham Curtin University
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (herein referred to as Indigenous Australian) comprise three percent of the Australian population (Australian Government, 2013). Distributed across the continent, Indigenous Australians are one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse populations in the world. It is commonly acknowledged that health outcomes for this group are lower than those of non-Indigenous Australians."

13 Mar 14: "It’s clear that Australians care about this issue and expect our leaders to act, Progress is starting to be made on Indigenous health, as outlined by Prime Minister Tony Abbott last month in his closing the gap speech to Parliament. ... The target to halve the gap in child mortality within a decade is on track to be met, and smoking rates amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are going down. ... But there’s still a long way to go, which is why we need Federal and State Governments to take a coordinated approach and continue funding Indigenous health initiatives in order to build on the progress already made." ANTaR Victoria: Reflections on Close [Closing] the Gap Reports
http://antarvictoria.org.au/news/reflections-on-close-%5Bclosing%5D-the-...
"It was great to see the politicians in the same room, at the launch of the CTGC [Close the Gap Campaign] report and in Parliament. But for positive change to happen, the principles of community control, cultural safety and appropriate resourcing must be adhered to. Otherwise we will never get beyond good intentions and never break the habit of paternalism." By Peter Lewis
