http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/18887804/juveniles-return-to-ban...
12 Sep 13: "Juveniles started being shifted back to Banksia Hill detention centre yesterday, almost eight months after a riot forced their transfer to a men's prison. The Department of Corrective Services transferred 24 juveniles to the detention centre and expects the rest will be returned to the facility within a few weeks." Amanda Banks, The West Australian

5 Sep 13: "Western Australia's Corrective Services Minister says his government wants to stop locking children up. ... Joe Francis says it's time for a radical overhaul of the state's youth justice system. But, his comments come as the deadline for moving children out an adult prison is continually pushed back. Corrective Services Minister Joe Francis is seeing for himself the alternative to locking children up. He's being taken on a tour of the current and former construction sites of the Liveworks program. The program teaches young offenders or those at risk the basics of the building industry - hopefully along the way installing a work ethic and sense of pride." By Ryan Emery

* MJA: PREVANCE AND PERCEPTIONS OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN ABORIGINAL AND NON-ABORIGINAL YOUNG PEOPLE IN CUSTODY

- Report

MJA - Medical Journal of Australia: Prevalence and perceptions of overweight and obesity in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people in custody
Leigh Haysom, Devon Indig, Elizabeth Moore, Louise L Hardy and Paul A van den Dolder
https://www.mja.com.au/journal/2013/199/4/prevalence-and-perceptions-ove...
August, 2013: "Conclusions: Overweight and obesity were highly prevalent but poorly recognised in young people in custody. A longer incarceration time had the strongest association with overweight obesity and self-reported weight gain. From a population health and policy perspective, changes to the liberal food environment and the approach to increasing physical activity in custody are warranted."

* THE WIRE: THE COALITION ANNOUNCES $42 MILLION CUT TO ABORIGINAL LEGAL AID

- Audio

The Wire: The Coalition announces $42 million cut to Aboriginal legal aid
Produced by Saskia Edwards
http://www.thewire.org.au/storyDetail.aspx?ID=10788
6 Sep 13: "The Coalition's announcement to cut $42 million to Indigenous legal aid has sparked outrage amongst Indigenous advocacy groups who claim this will drastically impair services. Shadow Treasurer Joe Hokey and Shadow Minister for Finance Andrew Robb yesterday announced the Coalition's policy costings, which included a 20 per cent scale back of Indigenous legal aid. This means reductions to eight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legal service organisations across Australia. This move has enraged Indigenous legal service providers, saying it will increase the incarceration of Indigenous people. ...

* STEPHANIE QUINE, LAWYERS WEEKLY: CUTS TO INDIGENOUS LEGAL AID A BACKWARDS STEP

- News

Lawyers Weekly: Cuts to indigenous legal aid a backwards step
http://www.lawyersweekly.com.au/news/cuts-to-indigenous-legal-aid-a-back...
11 Sep 13: "The Coalition’s planned cuts to indigenous legal services will lead to increased prison costs ... "It’s not a huge amount of money in the overall scheme of things [but] it will have huge impacts on a highly specialised service," said the president of the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA), Geraldine Collins. "You will see an increase in people facing custodial sentences and, if we’re talking about this solely as an economic factor, that doesn’t make sense; putting somebody in jail and keeping them in jail is far more expensive than providing funding for legal services for them."" Stephanie Quine
