Indymedia Australia: 200 Aboriginal Maralinga victims denied compensation
http://indymedia.org.au/2013/01/20/200-aboriginal-maralinga-victims-deni...
20 Jan 13: "Maralinga’s and Emu Field’s long suffering Aboriginal victims of the British atomic tests have been told by lawyers that a class action for compensation would fail and that the fight in the courts is over because apparently it is impossible to adequately prove radiation from the atomic blasts specifically caused their illnesses and the premature deaths. Maralinga victim Yami Lester said this is "rubbish" and that his blindness was caused by nothing else other than the fallout from the blasts. He was a young child at the time. Human rights lawyers and advocates have called for both the Australian and British Governments to finally take full responsibility and to make ex-gratia payments or what are also known as grace payments to the victims." Indymedia Australia: Goolarabooloo Law Bosses lift the ante in battle with Woodside over gas hub
http://indymedia.org.au/2013/01/20/goolarabooloo-law-bosses-lift-the-ant...
20 Jan 13: "Traditional custodians, Goolarabooloo Law Bosses Phillip Roe and Richard Hunter have responded to State Government authorisation of sacred site trespass with anger and the will to fight them in the Courts and at Walmandan in standing their ground. Last week Department of Indigenous Affairs Chief Heritage Officer Aaron Raynor said that the State Minister for Indigenous Affairs Peter Collier authorised Woodside access and the right to commence work on sacred sites as part of its exploration and assessment at the controversial James Price Point proposed gas hub site. Mr Roe said Goolarabooloo Law Bosses had not been forewarned of the Government’s decision and learned of it from the news media." By Gerry Georgatos

Indymedia Australia: Lobby restaurant incident - January 26, 2012 - Will Prime Minister Gillard finally admit the truth and apologise?
http://indymedia.org.au/2013/01/20/lobby-restaurant-incident-%E2%80%93-j...
20 Jan 13: "On the 26th of January last year headlines rocketed around the world out of Canberra from the Lobby restaurant incident where more than 200 protestors descended from the nearby 40th Aboriginal Tent Embassy celebrations and vigil. The Prime Minister’s Office, despite its public denials, tried to stage manage a confrontation between Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott and some of Aboriginal Tent Embassy’s high profile figures, including legendary co-founder of the Embassy, Michael Anderson. To this day, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Prime Minister herself continue to mislead the nation about the extent of their involvement." By Gerry Georgatos

Amnesty International Australia: Plans to toughen mandatory sentencing in WA a step in the wrong direction
http://www.amnesty.org.au/news/comments/30857/
18 Jan 13: "Amnesty International says comments by the West Australian Attorney General, Michael Mischin, that he’d like to toughen mandatory sentencing laws, are disappointing for the state with the highest Indigenous incarceration rate in Australia. The organisation believes the Attorney General is inaccurate when he suggests his plan to tighten existing WA mandatory sentencing laws will reduce crime, rather, these laws will result in further victimisation of Aboriginal children and effectively place more young offenders in jail. Tightening mandatory sentencing laws will compound the already discriminatory impact the laws have on Aboriginal people in WA."

Indymedia Australia: Murujuga National Park at long last - however the struggle is not over
http://indymedia.org.au/2013/01/20/murujuga-national-park-at-long-last-h...
20 Jan 13: "The West Australian Government has approved the creation of the Murujuga National Park on the Burrup Peninsula, near Karratha, however with a caveat. The National Indigenous Times has recently visited the site, twice in the last couple of weeks and it is a historical preserve that needed to be confirmed. Local Elder Wilfred Hicks is pleased, however much of the surrounds need to be preserved as petroglyphs, rock art and other historical sites need to preserved. "World Heritage listing needs to be the final outcome to protect our country and its history for our people," said campaigner, descendent of the historical peoples who created the rock art and Elder, Wilfred Hicks" By Gerry Georgatos
