- Media Release

Leaders of the Congregations and Provinces of the Sisters of St Joseph, Australia
Why the Continuing Gap?
Sisters of St Joseph question the contradiction between 'Stronger Futures Legislation' and the government's commitment to trust and respect?
http://www.sosj.org.au/_uploads/_cknw/files/MEDIA%20RELEASE%20Stronger%2...
26 Feb 12: "The Sisters of St Joseph continue to question the government’s proposed expansion of compulsory income management, its punitive welfare policy, and the pursuit of SEAM, which purportedly aims to improve school enrolments and attendance.
Speaking as a Leader of the Sisters of St Joseph right across Australia, Sr Anne Derwin expressed the disappointment that many Australians are also expressing at this time.
'This latest bill reminds us once again of all our concerns about the previous legislation. The Bill seems to be at cross purposes with the Government’s own social inclusion principles. The rights of Aboriginal people are not sufficiently protected, and the new legislation was developed even before the evaluations of the previous programs were concluded,' Sr Anne said. 'We are particularly disturbed by the continuing failure to include the Aboriginal communities in genuine and adequate consultation and participation. ... '"

Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart: New Legislation does not respect Aboriginal wishes
http://www.sosj.org.au/news-events/view_article.cfm?id=786&loadref=7
29 Feb 12: "There is considerable disquiet among Aboriginal people about the latest Bill which seeks to extend the Northern Territory Intervention for 10 years. Elders do not believe the Stronger Futures Consultation looked honestly at the evidence nor has it listened to the peoples experience of living with that Intervention. As Jenny Macklin said in her address to the parliament "The measures we introduce today reflect our evaluation-of what is working and what is not". Sadly it does not reflect what Aboriginal people are saying."

- News

Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney: NT Intervention Policy a Travesty - Bishop
http://www.sydneycatholic.org/news/latest_news/2012/201239_1024.shtml
9 Mar 12: "Bishop Christopher Saunders, Chairman of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council is adamant the Government's intention to extend its controversial Intervention Policy in the Northern Territory for a further 10 years is a "travesty." "At the heart of this travesty is a mentality that believes the opinions of Aboriginal people simply do not matter. Any notion of a right to self determination of their future by Australia's Indigenous people has been overwhelmed by an expediency that promises neither a just outcome nor a fair one," he says."

Amnesty International Australia: Policies of exclusion continue in NT remote Indigenous housing programs
http://www.amnesty.org.au/news/comments/28052/
7 Mar 12: "Progress in delivering houses for Northern Territory Indigenous communities is being hampered by the Government’s continued neglect of a significant proportion of the Territories’ Aboriginal population, Amnesty International has said. While Amnesty International welcomes the Government’s announcement this week of the near completion of over 500 new houses in Northern Territory communities, it remains concerned that no funding for new houses has been allocated for over a third of the population living on traditional homelands."

- Review

Green Left: Stronger Futures ignores Aboriginal voices
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/50323
11 Mar 12: "The latest Concerned Australians book, NT Consultations Report 2011 - By Quotations, couldn’t have been released at a better time. The simple but powerful collection of quotes are selected from the federal government’s Stronger Futures consultations, conducted across the Northern Territory between June and August last year. ... Stronger Futures places even more control in the hands of the government at a time when, Concerned Australians says, "the single most repeated message from the consultations is the demand for community control ... and the right to self-determination"." 12 Mar 12: "A new report finds the processes around Northern Territory community consultations for new laws extending the Federal Government's Intervention were flawed. The 'Listening But Not Hearing' report looks at some three months of consultations in 100 Indigenous communities for the new Stronger Futures legislation which is currently before the Senate. The report was prepared by the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology Sydney and co-author Alastair Nicholson QC says the reaction to the proposed laws was overwhelmingly negative."

9 Mar 12: "The Australian government has been accused of conducting sham dialogues that were supposed to back its Stronger Futures legislation for the indigenous communities of the Northern Territory. ... What had transpired, Mr Fraser [Former PM Malcolm Fraser] said on Friday, was "old fashioned white paternalism at its very worst." Mr Fraser's scathing remarks were made following the publication of a university report, titled 'Listening but not Hearing', critical of the consultations that the Labor-led government had conducted with Aboriginals in the region."

Winter 2011: "The Intervention is yet another example of the appalling treatment the Aboriginal People of Australia have been subjected to in such a short period of time compared to thousands of years of survival. Sinem Saban and Rev. Dr Gondarra supported by the Yolngu people and cinematographer, Damien Curtis, have created a sensitive and realistic view of the plight of those who wish to live a more traditional life in their homelands and of those who appear to be dispossessed." Summer 2010: "Local resident and journalist, Jeff McMullen introduced "Our Generation", the film by Sinem Saban and Damien Curtis which we were there to see. The film explored in depth the Federal Government Intervention into Aboriginal Communities in the Northern Territory. Jeff had told us that the film’s producers were not having any success in having the film shown on government or commercial media outlets and they were having to screen it in local community halls to show the community at large just what was involved in the Intervention. It is basically a war on Aboriginal culture. The dispossession of the Aboriginal people is simply continuing in a new guise." Carol Gerrard
