Talk blak, talking back: conversations on political blak art

Date and Time:
Thursday, June 2, 2011 -
6:00pm to 7:30pm
Location:
BMW Edge Federation Square

A challenging series of conversations and visual presentations of contemporary visual art from artists who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders and who have chosen to make political and protest statements through their work. Recent media commentary and debate around Indigenous identity and history suggest that it is a vexed and sometimes litigious subject.

Join the conversation around the contribution that politically engaged urban-based contemporary Indigenous visual artists have made to issues of identity, culture, racism and history. Daniel Browning, the presenter of 'Awaye!' on ABC Radio National will MC and moderate discussions with Brisbane proppaNOW collective member Vernon Ah Kee, Melbourne artist Bindi Cole and historian and curator Tony Birch. The evening will also see the launch of the groundbreaking Artlink Indigenous: beauty and terror - a new mega-edition of Artlink, co-edited by Stephanie Radok and Daniel Browning. Free giveaways to four lucky guests
