Since the Baillieu government was elected, the only policy it seems prepared to spend money on is 'law and order': Armed guards on stations, longer sentences, more prisoners, more jails, a new riot squad and on-the-spot fines for swearing in public. This is despite crime rates actually decreasing. The issues that are really making people's lives hard (such as underfunded or non-existent health services, overcrowded public transport; traffic jams; and increasing electricity and water bills) are being deliberately ignored.
The following speakers will be talking:
Rob Stary - Civil liberties lawyer
Amanda George - Western Suburbs Legal Service, prison abolitionist & Flat Out, a post-release support service for women & children
