The Ugandan anti-homosexuality bill is racing towards passage, could pass any day now

The Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill is racing towards passage -- LGBTI Ugandans are worried it could pass any day now, and are holding out hope that international corporations will speak up now against this hateful bill, before it becomes law. An incredible 100,000 of us have signed our petition calling for Pepsi to speak out unequivocally against this bill, but the corporate higher-ups at Pepsi have remained silent. Time is running out before the “Kill the Gays” bill becomes law -- so now is the time to ramp up our pressure on Pepsi.

We just found out that Pepsi has launched a social media campaign encouraging people to tweet their #LiveForNow moment. Let's fill Pepsi's Twitter stream with our view of what Pepsi's #LiveForNow moment is -- to publicly oppose the “Kill the Gays” bill, and help show Ugandan legislators that this bill should never see the light of day.

That link is preloaded with a tweet you can use, but feel free to change it. Just keep #LiveForNow in the tweet so we can be sure Pepsi sees it.

How should @Pepsi #LiveForNow? By opposing the Uganda "Kill the Gays" bill. Sign the petition at http://bit.ly/U8epDt via @Sum_of_us

Here's a message you can use, but it's even more powerful to write your own:
Pepsi has a responsibility as a major player in Uganda and as a multinational company to speak out against the Ugandan Anti-Homosexuality Bill. Specifically, 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for Pepsi’s African Division to release a statement in opposition, and for the Ugandan Director to communicate Pepsi’s opposition directly with MPs in Uganda.

Pepsi is a major player in the Ugandan economy, and has seen its market share grow year after year. According to the Ugandan Prime Minister, Pepsi is making a “great contribution... to the growth of our economy in Uganda and to the well-being of our people.” That means that when Pepsi speaks, Ugandan officials take notice.

The famous historian Howard Zinn once said "you can't be neutral on a moving train." This is Pepsi's chance to prove it's on the right side of history, by speaking out against this horrific legislation. Let’s use our power as Pepsi consumers, and potential consumers, to challenge Pepsi to speak out -- before it’s too late.

Thank you for continuing to fight against homophobia,

Kaytee, and the rest of us
