Dear friends of the rainforests,
with its magnificent beaches and rolling green hills, many consider the Dominican Republic to be a vacation paradise. That could soon be history, however. Two Canadian companies intend to mine for gold there in an open pit. The highly toxic cyanide to be used by the mining operation will contaminate the soil and water throughout the region. Gold has no productive value and is usually purchased by major banks as an investment or made into jewelry.
“I’m too old for this. I’m not going to be driven off my land again,” says Juliana Guzman, a farmer from La Cerca. Ms. Guzman and the entire population of the Caribbean island nation are resisting the irresponsible mining operation: A Dominican initiative aims to collect one million signatures against gold mining in the rainforest.
Please help them now by signing a letter of protest to the involved companies and the Dominican government.
