10 Sep 12: "* The Gillard Labor Government is set to introduce income management in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in October following claims that there was strong support for the system at community consultations held in May.
* Sydney based researcher says all of the areas across Australia targeted for income management are places that have been neglected by government and instead of looking at the needs of the community and why there are social problems Government wasn’t to blame the people themselves for their disadvantage."

* EMMA MURPHY: ASSIMILATION LIES AT THE HEART OF NT INTERVENTION

- Analysis / Opinion

Green Left: Assimilation lies at the heart of NT intervention
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/52187
8 Sep 12: "... there are two points on that I’d like to make.
First, the people I’ve lived and worked with are among the oldest continuing cultures, speaking some of the oldest languages, in the world. I think all of Australia benefits from their ongoing strength and survival. In particular, urban and southern Aboriginal populations, and left activists fighting for a sustainable alternative to capitalism, benefit from this.
Second, what is happening in the Northern Territory, with the recently passed Stronger Futures laws and the government’s "Closing the Gap" campaign, is the pointy end of the neoliberal approach to "the Aboriginal issue". The approach manifests itself differently in urban and regional areas. But assimilation is the ultimate aim of these government policies." By Emma Murphy

- Analysis / Opinion

Arena: Driving In The NT

Sep 2012: "Following the Intervention, police were under pressure to make more prosecutions, and targeting driving offences needed minimal investigation and reliance on witnesses. Overall, offending charges increased by 250 per cent between 2002–06 and 2006–10. In 2006 the Howard government’s highly publicised denunciation of the alleged moral backwardness of Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory led to a dramatic increase in police presence and infrastructure." 6 Sep 12: "Rollo Manning wants to see pharmacies established in communities. ... An Aboriginal health consultant is calling on local business to build pharmacies in remote Territory communities to create jobs and economic growth. Currently the supply of pharmaceutical drugs for communities is contracted through businesses in Darwin and Alice Springs. Consultant Rollo Manning says a different system could offer the local residents more support "If there was a pharmacy in say Maningrida or Wadeye, then that's the place they could be getting their medicines from and would be making their money so in terms of actual capital it needs to be put forward. "It doesn't need to be much more than the infrastructure to make it happen." You can listen to the entire interview on this page."

Have they thought of income management for Labor politicians? The hypocracy involved is beyond belief. They know that alot of the alcohol related issues are also a manifestation of poor govt policy, over priced food to people in remote areas and all the aspects of racism and assimilation policy that go with it. Go for it Labor.

Or alternatively, do you think all labor mps who are due their lifetime super should return at least 505 of it to the aboriginal communities for real policies with real outcomes. Not just the ones that make news for polls or elections.

(Good to hear about the results in the NT> A sign of real change.)
