No matter what your stance is on Income Management, the role it has played in the Northern Territory and plans now in place to see it rolled out around Australia – it cannot be denied that women’s experience of the policy is central to the debates that currently swirl around the issue.
A recent report by Equality Rights Alliance found that many women did not feel safer under the policy and that it often resulted in feelings of a loss of respect and dignity.
As the Government rolls this policy out to five test sites around the country – what is this going to mean for women more generally in Australia? And is this policy really the answer?
