ABC PM: Labor's extended NT Intervention sparks calls for indigenous communities to vote Green

13 Jul 12: "More ructions in the Labor Party over the Greens, with the Indigenous former party President Warren Mundine calling on the Federal Government to dump any alliance with the Greens on Aboriginal affairs. Mr Mundine says Labor should ally with the Coalition instead on this issue, and Tony Abbott has welcomed the call. But the opposite message is resonating in some traditional Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. There many Indigenous leaders are angry at the Labor Party's recent 10 year extension of the Howard government's dramatic Intervention. As a result, some have urged Aboriginal voters to abandon Labor in favour of the Greens."

13 Jul 12: "There are signs the continuation of the NT intervention is pushing some Indigenous communities to abandon support for Labor. ... Labor in the Northern Territory has long relied on the support of Indigenous voters. But its decision to extent by a decade the Howard government's intervention into Aboriginal community throws that into doubt. The emergency response was meant to boost the safety, health and education of indigenous children, but a billion dollars later there's evidence conditions in some communities have worsened, and at least one prominent Aboriginal leader is urging his people to abandon Labor and vote Green."

14 Jul 12: "Federal Labor risks being reduced to a rump in the Northern Territory over its continuing commitment to the intervention, with Indigenous leaders urging Aboriginal voters to back the Greens instead. And respected Arnhem Land elder, traditional owner, former Uniting Church moderator and chair of one of the Territory's largest retailers, Dr Djiniyini Gondarra, has launched a passionate attack on the Government at another NAIDOC gathering in Darwin. The Reverend Gondarra described the intervention as deeply racist and urged his audience to abandon Labor in favour of the Greens. The Reverend Gondarra is no radical, nor is he alone in his anger. ... "

14 Jul 12: "NATIONAL: In a sign that the political cracks are starting to appear, the NSW Labor Party’s annual state conference has passed a resolution calling on federal Labor to abandon compulsory income management across the nation, and instead direct funding to boost social services and job creation. The NSW branch of the Australian Labor Party is holding is annual state conference at the Town Hall in Sydney. ... "Today was to be 'liberation' day when prescribed communities in the Northern Territory were to be exited. Instead it is a day of shame, when Indigenous Australians in the NT have to endure, yet again, another anniversary of the NTNER intervention as demeaned peoples-marginalized, disempowered, encapsulated in the Australian settler colonial state. I am proud to be sharing this forum with Barb Shaw, Rosalie Kunoth-Monks, Les Malezar and Gary Foley, Indigenous people actively resisting attempts by the hegemonic Australian state to demolish their ways of being, seeking to convert them, via a draconian project of moral restructuring into subservient normalized citizens. ... Green Left: How 'Closing the Gap' is full of holes
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/51620
14 Jul 12: "I have mixed feelings each time I see a "Close the Gap" bumper sticker. The number of Australians expressing outrage on the appalling gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians - and demanding government action - is certainly heartening. ... [The Closing the Gap policy] is the framework for many of the governments’ "Aboriginal affairs" policies, and informs funding agreements between federal, state and territory governments. For example, the recently passed Stronger Futures legislation (which continues the widely hated NT intervention) comes under the Closing the Gap umbrella." By Emma Murphy
