The Western Australian Government announcement of $12.7 million funding from the Low Emissions Energy Development (LEED) Fund for new low emissions energy projects in Perth, the Mid-West and the Wheatbelt has been welcomed by the Sustainable Energy Association of Australia (SEA).
Funding was announced for bioenergy projects from Curtin University, Morton Seed and Grain, and Biogass Renewables; a geothermal project from Green Rock Energy Ltd; a solar thermal project from Solastor in consortium with Carbon Reduction Ventures; and two emissions capture projects from The University of Western Australia.
The in-principle funding announced by Environment Minister Bill Marmion and Energy Minister Peter Collier is subject to these projects matching every $1 of Government funds with at least $3 from elsewhere, potentially leading to a direct total investment of more than $50 million in low emissions technology in Western Australia.
‘Western Australia has a growing need for low emissions, integrated energy solutions, particularly around small to mid-scale renewable energy generation in remote and off-grid areas. Support for new projects in sustainable energy will require new jobs in the education, research, government, business and community sectors and has a significant potential market for this across Australia and throughout many regions globally,’ says SEA chief adviser Professor Ray Wills.
