Last Monday Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke approved BHP Billiton's supplementary Environmental Impact Statement for the expansion of the Olympic Dam mine.

The BHP Billiton board are now debating the final decision.

Reasons why the expansion should not go ahead:

The mine is to be one of the largest open cut mines in the world, 1km deep, 4.5km wide & 3km long.
The planned desalination plant threatens the Giant Australian Cuttlefish while water extraction from the Great Artesian Basin has adversely affected the precious Mound Springs of SA.
The production of radioactive tailings will increase seven-fold to 68 million tonnes annually, with inadequate tailings management plans to be dumped over a 44km squared area next to the mine site.
Export of 1.6 million tonnes of copper-uranium concentrate to China each year.

Please help us have a voice on this issue and join us for a National Day of Action this Thursday the 20th of October.

The Melbourne protest will be held at the BHP Billiton HQ; this day will coincide with BHP's London AGM.
