MEDIA RELEASE
Goodooga, 17 September 09 -- A northwest NSW Aboriginal political activist says the assault on four Indian men outside a bar in Melbourne this week is representative of the hidden racism that exists in Australia.
Michael Anderson, last survivor of the four Black Power activists who set up the Aboriginal Embassy outside Parliament House in Canberra in 1972, says politicians remaining mute on these racist attacks reflects badly on Australia as a nation.
Mr Anderson is leader of the 3,000 Euahlayi of northwest NSW and southwest Queensland and elected spokesman for some of the other 15 tribes of the Gumilaroi nation.
He says it is a disgrace not to have the politicians all coming out to condemn this racist abuse and suggests theyâre frightened that the backlash in their electorates will see them thrown out of parliament.
âIf these attacks happened in Europe or the USA, people would be out there protesting and politicians would be in unison with this outcry.â
âMy criticism of this countryâs racial intolerance comes from years of being racially abused and banned from places because I am an Aborigine,â Anderson says.
âNone of the English boat people who came in 1788 bothered to learn our languages; more importantly they fired the guns and killed my people and they even deny that this happened,â Anderson says.
His statement in full:
The assault on the Indian men in Victoria is representative of the hidden racism that exists in Australia.
The fact that the politicians in Australia choose to be mute on these racist attacks reflects badly upon Australia as a nation. We have a prime minister who is gutless to accept that Australia is a racially intolerant country.
Just think about it, even the media personalities encourage racial abuse through their radio talk back programs. On most occasions they argue that if the people are unable to assimilate then they should go back to their own country.
Another example of the extent of prejudice is the intolerance of Australians to foreign languages being kept and used by the new immigrants. Too often we hear white Australians talking amongst themselves that when people come to this country they should speak English and leave their own mother tongue back in the country from which they come.
It is a disgrace not to have the politicians all coming out to condemn this racist abuse. Or does their silence on this issue truly reflect the harsh reality of this hidden racism that exists in this country?
My criticism of this countryâs racial intolerance comes from years of being racially abused and banned from places because I am an Aborigine. It is time that Australian politicians stand up and speak out against racism. Or are they frightened that the backlash within their own electorate will see them thrown out of parliament and replaced by an even worse hard line racist?
Australians must now face a national debate on racism because they do not believe that they are racist and feel that they have the right to tell people to assimilate or go home. None of the English boat people who came in 1788 bothered to learn our languages; more importantly they fired the guns and killed my people and they even deny that this happened.
Australians must accept that they have a national constitution that permits the political racist to pass laws for âany race it deems necessaryâ. No other country in the world has this legal facility in their laws. When it is used against my people the politicians argue that what they do against us is a special measure and is for our own good. This in itself is absolutely racist, but they do not see it this way.
I urge the Indian government to make a statement on Australiaâs racism and suspend trade until this country has a good hard look at its racist practices. The suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act to apply laws against my people is proof enough of racism in this country and should alert international bodies to it.
If these attacks happened in Europe or the USA people would be out there protesting and politicians would be in unison with this outcry, but here in Australia politicians remain mute and defend Australians as not being a racist nation. This is not acceptable, these politicians that we have in Australia must stand up and be counted if they are offended by people being bashed because of their racial origin, instead of permitting the police to push it all under a carpet.
Those who carry out these assaults must be put in goal to show that this is not tolerated in this country.

Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
Small problem with the way that these crimes against visiting Indians have been presented in the controlled media.
In every incident of which I am aware, the Indians have been attacked by Lebs or Pacific Islanders, not Australians of European origin.
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
so lebs or p.i cant be classified as australian???
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
then you are not aware of much.
inciting violence and verbal abuse is also a serious issue.
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
One of the alleged attackers of Indian students in one instance was found to be of Indian origin himself so combining that with the evidence of Lebanese and Pacific Islander descent offenders I think that it's a pretty broad statement to lump all Australians as racist. The claims that the Government is keeping silent on the issue are also incorrect as the Prime Minister is visiting India in the near future as well to address the issue of their perceptions of what has been happening. Media reports are simply sensationalising the issue for their own ratings....where are the statistics relating to assaults in general and the proportion of Indian to non Indian victims? Not enough information and too many generalisations made in the title post I feel.
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
Every human being is racist. Not every human being 'hates' other races however. Some of us are trying to preserve racial diversity by fighting the multicult agenda.
Put different races into close geographic proximity and there will be clashes - its normal and natural behaviour and won't ever be stamped out.
The term 'tolerance' even betrays this. To tolerate requires constant effort and assumes an inherent negative reaction which is being suppressed.
The only real hope for the world is if each and every race feels they have their own space and autonomy.
How to achieve this should be the focus of our attention - not a constant attack on scapegoats who are actually the people seeking to find a solution - the Nationalists.
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
multiculturalism isnt the problem you fool. the problem is all the divisions within human society that we put up between each other. most cultures have divisions, like class for example. the rich hate the poor and vice versa. these divisions serve the interests of the ruling class. divided and conquered!
nationalism is pathetic!!!
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
ANGLO-ARSEtralia and ANGLO-ARSEtralians equals false pride, self adulation and bad charisma..pretty much throwbacks and relics..it's in their nature!
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
To elder
so these are the throwbacks and relics that feed you every day and provide housing and medical treatment while protecting you from other societies which would occupy your country and eliminate you?
what does that make you then?
Re: Melbourne attacks on Indians âreflect Australian racismâ
not all australian are racist, but there are some minority of them still racist towards indian and asian. I'm a permanent resident in australia but I am asian. I still experienced racism just because of my race. Just last week i went to lindt cafe @collins st, melbourne. I queued for 30 min for my table, when it was my turn to be seated, i asked for a table for four, behind me there were four ladies in their 40s who asked for a table for four as well. When there was an empty table for four, the waitress jump to the group of ladies of four to sit 1st. I'm confused and asked the waitress why she gave the table to them first when I queued infront of them. Even 2 customers who already seated told the waitress that they saw me queueing infront of them. The waitress ignorantly said "I didnt see you guys queueing, but i saw the four ladies first so they sit first". The 2 Australian customers who already seated helped us by saying to the waitress again that she cant just jumped queued like that, but the waitress ignored them. When I'm finally seated, and wanted to order, the waitress again ignored us. I'm so furious, how can a waitress so racist towards her customers? Maybe she look down at asian so she did those kind of things but i thought its not acceptable at all. How many asians and indians in australia? If we sabotage all asian not to come to lindt cafe because of the racist waitress, do you think lindt cafe which is located in the city can survive? most asian live in the city. We didnt do anything wrong, we queue, we pay and we respect the local people and by the way, we pay taxes as well. Its already 2010 not the 90s anymore, racism shouldn't exist!
He or she could soon be out of their job if people stop coming
Firstly, I certainly wouldnt be visting Lindt Cafe again or purchasing Lindt chocolates (there are plenty of other options). What surprises me is the silent racism by this waiter and what she is trying to do to you silently by treating you that way. What she did racially was confirmed by the other people jumping to your support and just goes to show everyone is not that way really. She or he (the waiter) must have felt a sense of achievement for behaving that way, but doesnt realise it could soon see him out of his job if people stop coming to Lindt Cafe.
Silent racism from my boss in a large Christian organisation
In most cases Australian racism can be very silent, making it hard to tackle the offender as racism is not legal in this country. As a victim of racism from my white boss in a well known Christian not for profit organzation I can tell you this can be so silent no one around except you would know this person is doing this to you. What shocks me is that this large Christian not for profit organization shows a different face on the outside asking for money to support its worthy cause against society less fortunate, yet ignoring the staff because of who you can administer those so called worthy projects. The bottom line is racism does exist in Australia, just done silently in some cases like in the example above in Lindt Cafe and my example.
