Speak Out for Benny Zable

Date and Time:
Thursday, August 11, 2011 -
9:30am to 10:30am
Location:
Court house, Zadoc Street Lismore

Friends of world famous, local artist/activist Benny Zable will be supporting him with a Speak Out when he appears before the Lismore Court:Benny will be there to hear the outcome of his appeal in regard to convictions arising from his arrest as one of 130 people who, on 5 December 2010, walked onto and occupied the rail line supplying coal to the Bayswater Power Station - Australia’s single largest source of carbon pollution.

Some 73 arrests were made, which makes the action the biggest mass arrest for coal civil disobedience yet.

Benny is optimistic about his appeal because 49 of those convicted had their appeals upheld in the East Maitland court last June.

After reading the references and bios of the protestors, the judge noted those appealing their convictions had all demonstrated community spirit and a commitment to social justice and environment. He found them to be “impressive and remarkable individuals”.

"The Speak Out will be part victory celebration and part farewell because later tomorrow Benny will be leaving Lismore on another journey to New York State as Nimbin's Ambassador to Woodstock," said Speak Out organiser Graeme Dunstan of Peacebus.com.
