During this 14 week full-time course running until June 14th, make your own short Documentary film for festival competition, and for broadcast supported by a professional mentor filmmaker. Learn practical skills in writing, producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound, editing and graphics. Certificate III in Media - Documentary Production comprises intensive, hands-on training with a focus on the documentary genre taught by a wide range of industry professionals. Aimed at entry-level practitioners, the course introduces students to industry standards while encouraging practical learning experiences. The course provides a valuable group learning experience, and as a full time study option, is Austudy eligible. *Fee Subsidies are available from 2011 through the Victorian Government for eligible students.
Mentor: Dennis K. Smith
Dennis is an award-winning independent filmmaker who has made seven documentaries for television, more than 50 commissioned films, several short films and has written two published histories. Dennis wrote and directed the documentary Rainbow Bird and Monster Man, which was nominated for four Australian Film Institute Awards and a Logie Award and won two AWGIE Awards, including the prestigious Gold AWGIE. Rainbow Bird was produced by John Lewis, photographed by Kevin Anderson and edited by Uri Mizrahi, the same team who made Troubled Minds. Dennis was a Producer on the Jeff Daniels film Ten Conditions of Love. Trained at Swinburne Institute (now VCA), Dennis now lectures at Open Channel, RMIT and La Trobe University. He has been a script assessor for the Australian Film Commission and the NSW Film & Television Office and judged documentaries for the annual awards of both the Australian Writers’ Guild and the AFI. Dennis recently directed the documentary Kapyong for Foxtel/Documentary Channel.
