Australian Doctor and Native American speak out against war and war games…
film highlights how war threatens environment, peace in our region
Dr Sue Wareham OAM, President of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War, and Native American peace activist, Judith le Blanc, will be in the Brisbane next week to raise their concerns about Operation Talisman Sabre, US – AUS joint military exercises set to start on July 6.
Dr Wareham will show the film Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War.
Talisman Sabre will take place QLD, NT, WA and the Coral and Arafura Seas. The Qld activities occur in some of the most environmentally precious locations in Australia including the biodiverse region of Shoalwater Bay in the central coast.
Dr Wareham, who appears in the film says "Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives: The Environmental Footprint of War" shows graphically the extent to which military activity is destroying the natural environment on which we depend.”
“A fraction of the $308 billion that was announced in the budget for the next decade of military spending, and the $48 million or more that will be spent on Talisman Sabre, could achieve major security benefits if channeled into renewable energies, environmental remediation and building regional goodwill.” Dr Wareham adds.
Friends of the Earth Brisbane is hosting the film night as part of a week of action and events in opposition to war and war games.
