This protest has been called to voice our opposition to the government's brutal and racist treatment of refugees in Australia. This protest is particularly urgent after this week's tragic events.

On Monday at the Villawood detention centre in Sydney, Josefa Rauluni, a Fijian man, who was due to be deported that day, committed suicide by throwing himself off the detention centre roof. More detainees who have been traumatised from ...witnessing the death of another asylum seeker and who are also under threat of deportation have now scaled the detention centre roof and are saying they will jump. There are also up to 20 Kurdish and Iranian asylum seekers on hunger strike.

The Australian government has blood on its hands. We can't let the government continue to destroy the lives of refugees. We need to take a stand in opposition to mandatory detention, offshore processing and the deportation of refugees and demand that refugees be housed in the community with the supports that they need.

As the Asylum Seeker Centre recently put it: "There are currently 4903 people in detention. 700 kids in detention. 21 detention centres. A billion dollars a year to detain people. When will the madness end?

Join us this Friday night!
We will also be handing out leaflets to promote the next major demonstration for refugee rights on November 7th. Please help us get the word out!
