The government of Hugo Chavez has won seven multi-party general elections in twelve years, yet Fox News calls Venezuela a dictatorship. In fact, what the United States fears is the example Venezuela is setting for the rest of Latin America and the world.
In recent years over 300 Australians have joined solidarity brigades to Venezuela, to see firsthand how the government is nationalising industries for workers to run and control. Venezuela is far from a socialist utopia, but its achievements are an important part of the renewal of Left politics in the 21st century.
