The Curtin Centre for Human Rights Education and Unions WA invite you to join them as they present a free screening of 'No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka'. Directed by Callum Macrae, 'No Fire Zone' is a powerful documentary that follows the last 138 days of the civil war in Sri Lanka.
In January 2009 the Sri Lankan government launched the final offensive in a 26 year war against the rebel forces of the Tamil Tigers or LTTE, who were fighting for an independent Tamil state within Sri Lanka. In the final stages of the war, the Sri Lankan government encouraged hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians to gather in “No Fire Zones”, where they said they would be safe. Drawing on video footage from those who were there, 'No Fire Zone' documents what happened during those final days.
The film is the culmination of a three year investigation by the producers of the film who were nominated for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. As international concerns grow over Sri Lanka hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November, the film is both a record and call to action for the atrocities portrayed to be subject to independent investigation.
